Sharing Second Grade
A Peek at Our Week!
August 28, 2017
MATH:
2.1 - In our first math unit students are learning to understand place value. We are modeling, reading, and writing numbers to 1000 using base ten numerals, number names, and expanded form. We will learn to skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s within 1000. We will compare two three-digit numbers using <, =, and >, and record the results of the comparisons. We will also draw picture graphs and bar graphs to represent data and use the data to solve problems presented in the graphs.
2.2 - On Thursday your student brought home a packet with ideas for them to practice their addition facts. Please read over it and let me know if you have any questions. It would benefit your student to do an activity (or two) every day. After students master the addition facts, we'll move on to subtraction, multiplication and division. These facts are an invaluable part of a successful math future, which is why this is the only math homework I will be sending home. Thanks for your support!
3.1 - In our first math unit the students are developing and using an understanding of place value to round whole numbers to the nearest 10 and 100. In this unit we will also learn to fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between addition and subtraction.
READING:
In our first reading unit our goal is to read with fluency, stamina, and comprehension. Students will learn strategies to tackle difficult words. As we read we will also discover some special techniques that our favorite authors use and apply them in our own writing.
WRITING:
In our first writing unit we are improving our narrative writing. Students are learning to stretch out and magnify their small moment stories by adding details and strong beginnings and endings. We will discover craft moves that authors use to create powerful stories and learn to add these techniques as we write.
SCIENCE:
Students will learn the difference between reversible and irreversible changes. Students will practice sorting cards and learn how to make hypotheses about what they think is going to happen to materials and liquids that are mixed together.
Curriculum Night
We hope you will be able to attend Curriculum Night on August 28 at 6:00 pm. You will get a glimpse into your child’s day as you visit his/her homeroom/reading and math classes. The teachers will review classroom and school policies, procedures and routines at that time. We hope all of our parents can attend!
Dive In Days
This school year, students will participate in “Dive In Day” twice a semester for two hours! This time will allow students to rotate through engaging “Deep Dive” sessions with several of our support staff leaders to develop critical and creative thinking skills.
