9/10/18: Signs of Suicide (SOS)
As part of our commitment to prevention education, Gilbert Public Schools (GPS) is offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS (Signs of Suicide) Prevention Program. The program has proven to be successful at increasing help seeking by students concerned about themselves or a friend and is the only school-based suicide prevention program listed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration as an evidence-based program. It helps students and adults demystify the confusion around what constitutes normal development and what may be a potentially serious issue.
The SOS Prevention Program is utilized at the elementary schools in 5th - 6th grades; and from 7th - 12th grades at the secondary level. We will review the presentations, and the SOS Portal for Parents that is posted on the GPS website for your information.
9/18/18: The Ripple Effect Documentary
A movie and a mission to eradicate suicide. This film is a part of a global mission to reduce suicides and suicide attempts around the world. Through sharing stories of survival and recovery, they are creating significant awareness of this health crisis while helping people find the support they need to stay alive, heal and #BeHereTomorrow!
9/25/18: Angst - Helping your child manage anxiety
Angst is a 56-minute film that explores anxiety, its causes, effects and what we can do about it. The filmmakers' goal is to have a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Angst features candid interviews with kids and young adults who suffer, or have suffered, from anxiety and what they've learned about it. The film includes discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, as well as help, resources and tools.

Grandparents Day
Friday, September 7th, is Grandparent's Day at the Swamp. This exciting day brings hundreds of visitors to Greenfield and so we thought we would send out a list of tips for each lunch (different from regular lunch) so that both students and grandparents alike have a wonderful experience. Please note, students without a grandparent available for this day are welcome to have a parent or other adult family member join them instead.
Tips for Grandparents Day
1. Opt for cold lunch choices if possible. Lunchtime is busy at fast food places any day, but we have heard in past years that people waited over a half an hour for orders to be filled! If you are not choosing to order school lunch using the form provided, you may want to skip the nearby restaurants.
2. Poinciana Road has been changed by the Town to a NO PARKING ZONE. While we have opened this gate in the past, we don’t want anyone to be ticketed by GPD, and so we are encouraging folks to NOT park on this street for this day. This back gate will remain locked. We will have some parking in our lot, and there will be quite a few spots in the lot off Greenfield Road, (which was formally the GCA student lot), and there are occasionally empty spots surrounding the school. While we have several handicapped spots, we have no way of guaranteeing that they will be open when needed. However, we have seen lots of success with families that are able to drop off and then pick up grandparents, or choose to walk from the neighborhood instead of requiring driving in.
3. Bring a book and pack your patience! :) If you would like to arrive early, we will have chairs set up so you can sit and wait until your grandchild's lunchtime. Also, because there is potential for backups in the cafeteria, lunchtimes may be delayed a bit so that each grade level has the opportunity to eat and enjoy each other. A book or magazine will help this time go by a bit faster.
4. Shopping opportunities await! Visit our huge Scholastic book fair with your grandchild if you would like to see all the goodies inside. Proceeds support our school in many ways!
5. Friday is Green Day at the Swamp. Many of our staff and students will be dressed in Gator Green. Please join us as part of the Gator Family!
6. No child may be signed out without being on the IC emergency contacts list. For purposes of this event, if your child’s grandparent will be checking them out for the day, an email to jennifer.paulson@gilbertschools.net from your registered email will suffice.
As a reminder: No debit or credit cards in cafeteria
