EL Curriculum
EL is a new curriculum that is new to second grade this year. This is a rigorous research based program that has already been implemented in third, fourth, and fifth grade. This quarter, we have been focusing on schools and why they are important. We have used background knowledge and have learned different turn and talk protocols to share ideas. We have read several texts including The Dot, The Invisible Boy, and Off to Class to answer our guiding question: What is school and why is it important?
How Can You Help at Home?
Second grade students are working to be independent readers by increasing reading stamina. Students need to be able to read the words and retell the story. At home, you can help your child choose appropriately challenging books by asking them to follow the five finger rule. (See Below.) We are also concentrating on asking and answering questions before, during and after reading. When your child reads at home ask them questions at all three times and make sure they show you where they found the answer in the text. If you are reading together, switch roles and have your student ask you questions.
This month in math we have focused on building a math community within our classroom as we explored addition and subtraction strategies. We have learned to explain our thinking, listen carefully as others share their ideas, agree and disagree respectfully, and build on conversation.
We have learned to solve equations for missing totals and missing partners, as well as, practicing mental strategies for adding and subtracting.
How Can you Help at Home?
Ask your child how to use the counting on strategy to solve these problems:
8 + 9 = ____
4 + ____ = 12
15 - 6 = _____
See the following link for examples of the strategies the students have learned with video support!
So far we have been learning about classroom rules, procedures and what it means to build a classroom community. Students have also learned about having a Growth Mindset in Social Studies. Ask your child about how they can "grow their brain"! We have learned about finding courage in making and learning from mistakes. Students also set personal goals for the year and learned about the power of yet ("I can't ____ yet, but with practice I will be able to!").
