Royals Report
#13 - March 5, 2020
Principal's Point
February has been a great month for our students. Students in grades 3-8 participated in the KDE Field Tesing and all students from grades K - 8 participated in a school-wide on-demand writing scrimmage. The students worked hard and did an outstanding job. Please encourage your child to work hard at school and to always do their best.
This is the time of year when students are missing school for illness. Please make sure to write a parent note or send in a doctor's note when your child is absent from school. Students can have up to 10 parent/doctor notes in one year.
Save the date! On Thursday, April 2nd from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., SVA will host our fourth annual school-wide Literacy Night. The event will be appropriate for students in grades P - 8 and invitations will be coming home soon. We will have many STEAM related activities and dinner for our families. Please look for the invitation and RSVP. Join us for a family, fun-filled night celebrating reading!

We will be having a number of exciting competitions this spring, including a tractor pull/hill climb, a drag race event, a treasure hunt, and will culminate with a Battle Bots competition to finish our season!
Meetings will be on Thursday’s, right after school in STEAM Lab II until 4:30pm. Our first Robotics Club meeting will be held on Thursday, March 12th in STEAM Lab II.
COVID-19 Information
Our schools deal with illness on a regular basis. While the coronavirus is new, the procedures we already have in place are the same recommendations for COVID-19.
Students and staff should be reminded to:
- Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 sec. especially before eating or after using restroom
- alcohol based hand sanitizer can be used if needed
- Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth because germs spread this way
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing and put the tissue in the waste basket. If you don’t have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your upper sleeve or elbow-NOT YOUR HANDS
- Don’t share cups or eating utensils
KCSD Practices in Place:
- Custodial staff are using a hospital grade disinfectant on surfaces
- High contact areas (handrails, door knobs, water fountains) and areas identified by principals as high volume “sick areas” will receive extra custodial attention
- Soap dispensers contain antibacterial foaming hand cleaner
- Transportation staff are using a hospital grade disinfectant spray on bus seats/surfaces after the last run of each day
According to Governor Andy Beshear and state and local health officials, no one in Kentucky has been diagnosed with COVID-19.
As always we will continue to monitor our attendance in the district. Additionally, the Kentucky Department for Public Health can close schools when they determine that overall public health would be affected.
In closing, we will continue to be in communication with the Kentucky Department of Education and our Northern Kentucky Health Department as necessary and will pass along any pertinent information we receive.
Produce Man's Healthy Challenge 2020
SVA is participating in Produce Man’s Healthy Challenge 2020! The Healthy Challenge is the annual school challenge for all students grades K-5 and staff coordinated by the Northern Kentucky Health Department. The Healthy Challenge is in March for National Nutrition Month™.
Why is Summit View participating in this Challenge? Many children and adults today do not get the recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables needed for optimal growth, vital nutrients and disease prevention. Five daily servings of fruits and vegetables is a minimum we should aim for. The American Heart Association recommends 4-5 servings EACH of fruits and vegetables daily (8-10 servings) for optimal intake.
What does my child need to do?
1. Each student will receive a Tracking Chart (link below if you need another copy) to track TWO GOALS:
2. The first goal is to eat/try at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day for at least 5 out of 7 days.
3. The second goal is be active 150 minutes/week (which is about 30 minutes/5 days) daily for the Challenge. Children actually need 60 minutes of physical activity daily. They get some of that at recess/gym each week. Encourage kids to play when get home from school versus watching TV etc.
4. Turn in their successfully completed Tracking Chart at the end of the Challenge Week (Monday, March 16) to COUNT towards the schools numbers and they will get a certificate/free pass from our sponsor: Lazer Kraze.
5. During PE class we will be conducting fun nutrition education activities about fruits and vegetables and other healthy habits.
All students that “successfully complete” the Challenge and turn in their Tracking Chart will receive a certificate & FREE pass to Laser Kraze Laser Tag & Trampoline Park!
The five winning schools will receive a visit from the Health Department’s mascot, Produce Man. Please support your child and their school by making fruits and vegetables available to them at home for dinner and over the weekend and supporting them in being physically active. This is a great opportunity for YOU and your child to try new fruits and vegetables and for you to be a great role model to your child by continuing the Challenge at home over the weekend and in the evening so the whole family can benefit! BEST OF LUCK!

Camp Invention is returning to SVA!
During this program, young innovators will:
- Build a cityscape out of upcycled materials, navigate planes through a storm and take apart a robot they'll bring home at the end of the program.
- Learn the value of their creativity as they sketch and build prototypes, design logos, market their invention and protect their intellectual property.
- Collaborate and discover solutions to protect the Earth's ecosystems as they compete in zipline races, explore energy conservation and help wildlife habitats.
- Discover the great inventors behind their favorite sports, play high-energy games and design the ultimate sports complex.
Camp Invention's activities give participants the opportunity to explore, create and build confidence as they bring their biggest ideas to life.
Local educators facilitate the program and enthusiastic high school students serve as Leadership Interns, ensuring that one staff member is in place for every eight children.
Register using promo code INNOVATE30 to save $30 off (expires 2/11), SUM25 to save $25 (expires 3/31) or SUM 15 to save $15 (expires 5/12) off the $235 registration fee. Availability is limited. Visit invent.org/camp or call 800-968-4332 to secure your child's spot today!

SVA's Cell Phone Usage and BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Policy:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1IQtsLmnaT56Fif0swATynhQvTl2swSXM
This school year, SVA is allowing students in grades 4-8 to bring in school approved devices for classroom usage. With the continued support of our PTSA, we are moving closer and closer to 1:1 for our students but are not quite there yet. Recommended devices for students include Chromebooks and laptops. Information and permission forms will be sent home with all students in grades 4-8 or you can access the forms at bit.ly/SVABYOD if this is a program you want your child to participate in. Cell phones and tabletsare not recommended as a BYOD for educational purposes and therefore will not be an approved device. Cell phones and tablets are to be left in student backpacks/lockers during the school day unless directed by teacher for classroom use. We will review this change with students and teach new procedures at the start of this school year. We appreciate your help in reminding your child that cell phones should be off and stored in their backpacks/lockers at the start of the school day and should be taken home with them at dismissal. All communication to your child during the school day regarding changes in transportation for dismissal should be done through the main office.
