We have almost completed the first week of our two week swimming programme. It is important that after the programme finishes that students are given the opportunity in the weekend or in the holidays to continue practising the skills they have learnt in the pool. Swimming is one family activity that doesn't cost a lot of money and is great fitness too!!! Whilst swimming lessons can be expensive for some families, a few visits to the local pool each term does not cost a lot and helps build confidence in the water.
As a nation surrounded by water and blessed with beautiful rivers and lakes it is important that all of us know how to stay alive if we are faced with a situation where we end up in water out of our depth. Sadly the Water Safety NZ statistics state that as at 5 March this year there have been 15 preventable drownings in NZ. This is very sad and often avoidable. The skills our students are learning may well save their life one day.

St Patrick's Day - Wednesday 17 March
St Patrick is one of the patron saints of Ireland. He is said to have died on March 17 in or around the year 493. He grew up in Roman Britain, but was captured by Irish raiders and taken to Ireland as a slave when he was a young adult. After some years he returned to his family and entered the church like his father and grandfather before him. He later returned to Ireland as a missionary and worked in the north and west of the country. According to popular legend, St Patrick rid Ireland of snakes. However, it is thought that there have been no snakes in Ireland since the last ice age. The "snakes" that St Patrick banished from Ireland, may refer to the druids or pagan worshipers of snake or serpent gods. He is said to be buried under Down Cathedral in Downpatrick, Ireland. Ireland’s other patron saints are St Brigid and St Columba.
