Update for French 1 - 9/2/14
Les événements de la classe de français
Dear parents and students,
We have been working on being able to introduce ourselves to French speakers, talk about where we are from and tell someone our phone numbers. We have learned that nouns in French have gender. You would never think a table is feminine or a book is masculine. The item is not, but in French, the word is. And...the French have two pronouns for "you." Vous is formal, like when you speak to the Principal of your school. It is also used whenever there are two in the you, like you all. Tu is informal and used for children, friends and family. Ask your student to give you some information on all of this at the dinner table.
Next, we are moving into vocabulary relating to school and studies. This includes telling the time of classes and activities. Cognates are words that are spelled similarly, pronounced almost the same and mean the same thing in two languages. They are great friends because they really facilitate learning vocabulary. Here is one: le papier...yes, paper. Watch out for a few little gremlins that look like cognates, but are false cognates. Here is one for you to tackle. Look in the box below and decide if le crayon is a friend or a gremlin.
Please look in your student's course via the parent view and check out grades and progress. Please remember and remind your students that I am here to help. Encourage them to get in touch with me if they need assistance.
Finally, please urge your students (this class does have siblings) to attend our Live Class on Wednesdays at 5:30PM. I'll be there with enrichment and to give help.
Cordialement,
Barbara Abell
