AMCMS Principal's Office
What is going on in the Principal's Office?
My Challenge to You
Take about 5 minutes and watch the video above. Here is what I really like about this video. I like that it is anonymous so only the student that completed the problem knows it is theirs. I like that the teacher is not just telling the students what is wrong and why it is wrong but she is focused on telling the students what she likes about the thinking and the process the student was using to solve the problem. I like that she is being very positive and encouraging in the feedback and although failure is involved the method in which the teacher provides the feedback promotes future risking taking by students.
I know that math is utilized in this video but I am sure that you can think of ways that you either provide this type of feedback to your students. This is a great example of learning from failure...of helping students see that although the end result was not the "correct" answer there were many good things that occurred along the way.
This is an example of life. Despite all the hard work, despite doing everything to the best of our ability, despite putting all of our resources into our work, sometimes we just come up short in the end. Do you quit when it does not come out the way you wanted? Do you stop trying when it does not go your way? Do you never take a risk again because of previous failure? I hope not. I hope that you focus on what you did right, what went well, what could have been done better, and you keep on taking chances.
We must teach this to our students. When they fail we have to be that voice that tells them to keep on trying, to keep on working hard, to look at the good and then determine where the error came into play. As teachers we should do this all the time but sometimes we just need that reminder to keep doing it for all of our students.
Think. Achieve. Succeed.
Jeff
