Apartheid Article
Apartheid means separateness. Laws where created to force segregation of people by race. Apartheid allowed Europeans to grow rich and wealthy while millions blacks where poor and suffered. This segregation was apart of law until 1993. The civil rights movement happened at the same time Apartheid in Africa was happening. South Africans where legally classified by color of skin. The racial classifications where Asian, white, black, and colored but most South Africans where classified as black. Different races had separate office buildings, services, schools, libraries, etc. The buildings for white people where much nicer than those for any other race. Blacks suffered the most during apartheid even though they where the largest population. Dutch controlled government took their citizenship away and could not vote. Homelands were poor and very crowds areas that often didn't have water away from the cites. The ANC (national congress) was founded in 1912. Its goal was to bring people of all races together. F.W. de Klerk was the president that ended Apartheid. Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years fro starting nonviolent protests against Apartheid. HE was released when President F.W. de Klerk granted his release. Mandela was also the first South African black president.
