Preparing for Final Exams - Top Ten Tips for Middle School
1. Make academics and preparing for your exams the focus for the next few weeks. Studying properly takes time, effort, and structure. Get organized, ask for help, and put forth the effort and time required to properly prepare for each final exam that you will write this year.
2. Select a consistent place and time to study. Some people need total quiet and ear plugs while others can study well with calm music playing in the background. Put your phone and electronics away and out of sight. Find a comfortable place that has adequate lighting and keep your study supplies and materials within reach. Use a proper chair and table or desk to show that you mean business.
3. Don’t wait until the last week or the last night before exams start to begin your studying and review for final exams. Many of your exams test your knowledge and applying that knowledge based on a full school year’s worth of learning. Study a little every night during the weeks leading up to your exam. You cannot successfully cram a year’s worth of learning into one night of study time.
4. Make your own study guide for each subject area that you will be sitting a final exam in. One great way to study is to review a unit or chapter of learning and make your own notes based on notes you previously took and important concepts or information from the chapter/unit of study. Ask your teacher to review key sections and important information from each unit you studied this year. Merge this information with your notes and create your own study guide.
5. Make study cards. On the front of a note card write the word or concept. On the back write the definition or important information. Have a friend or parent show you the front of the card and your task is to explain the concept or definition in detail.
6. Organize a group study session or get together with friends and plan a study session. It can be helpful to study in groups – sometimes. Decide whether you can actually study with others to assist you in reviewing subject material and assist you with preparing for a final exam.
7. Attend extra help sessions with your subject teacher(s). Talk to your subject teacher and review when he/she offers extra help each week. Come prepared with questions or concepts that you previously struggled with so you can review and receive one-on-one support.
8. Ask your teacher if there will be a study guide or a review guide or specific days set aside for exam review. Communicate with your teacher and let him/her know the concepts or sections that you struggled with and need to go over. Find out when review days are scheduled and be prepared with your notes and questions.
9. Study for the style of exam and ensure that you know what to expect on the exam and how it will be structured. Is your exam multiple choice, calculations, short answer questions, etc. Does your exam test your knowledge using a variety of question types?
10. Use the method of studying that works for you. If you are a visual learner creating mind maps or diagrams to visualize the concepts you have learned and how they relate to one another might help. Think about concepts you have learned in Science for example. Practice the types of questions you might see on your Math final exam.
