Ms. Larrabee's 1st Grade Class
The Buzz This Week (9/28 - 10/2)
Writing: We are continuing to work through our Small Moments unit, where the kids are writing about real life experiences. The kids began their first writing piece last week. We will work through the entire writing process this week.
Reading: This is the last week of practicing small group reading rotations. Next week, reading groups will be in full swing! We are also reading the story Matthew and Tilly by Rebecca C. Jones this week as we continue to make text to self connections as we read. As we read our short weekly passage, we'll work on vocabulary, visualizing, making connections, determining the problem and solution, and knowing the main character.
Word Work: This week our studies in vocabulary will be to the short e sound in words like leg, let, men, red. Additionally, we are continuing our sight word development with the words: were, then, saw, give, one.
Social Studies: We finished our What is a Scientist? unit last week and will begin our first main social studies unit this week. We'll be studying American Symbols, specifically the American Flag, Liberty Bell, Statue of Liberty, Bald Eagle, role of the President and Mount Rushmore.
Math: We will finish the Numbers to 120 unit this week. Students will compare numbers up to 120 with the <, > and = symbols. We'll also determine if a number sentence is true or false. Last, we'll build a 120 chart together, discussing different number patterns noticed.
We've been exploring and learning more on our iPads! Last week, we explored on the App, BrainPop. BrainPop has different educational videos paired with activities/ quizzes.

Last week we sorted objects based on properties. First, we sorted our rocks with as many properties that we could think of as a class (weight, color, size, etc). The next day we sorted a bag of objects I had collected from our classroom and outside from Project IDEA. While sorting these objects, the kids came up with many questions, such as, "What is a Kleenex made of?" It was great to see these kids engaged in collaborative work!
(9/21 - 9/26)
The Fun Run was a great success last Friday! We had a lot of fun stretching/ getting pumped for the run, running and celebrating after completing the run! Thank you for coming and supporting our little ones on their run!
We also had a great time at the Bike Rodeo! We received great compliments from our Kirkwood Police Department! We also had several kids handle falling off of their bike like a champ and learn to ride their bike without training wheels!
