Concussion

Definition
A concussion is temporary unconsciousness caused by a blow to the head.
Causes
A concussion is caused by a blow to the head or the jarring or shaking of the brain in the skull.
Assessment Findings
Individual may feel dizzy, experience pain, may not be able to recall what happened, and have a ringing sound heard.
Symptoms
- Headache
- Confusion
- Lack of coordination
- Memory loss
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Dizziness
- Ringing in ears
- Sleepiness and extreme fatigue
Treatment
Field Treatment - Discontinue any physical activity and allow individual to rest. Can give Tylenol or other pain relievers or headache pain medications to relieve pain and symptoms.
Hospital Treatment - There is no real hospitable procedures for treatment, unless symptoms are extremely severe. Rehabilitation may be suggested by a physician.
Prevention
There is no sure way of preventing a concussion; however, wearing the correct protective equipment and wearing it correctly may help to prevent a concussion.
