5th Grade Reading Buddies

ESL teacher, Teri Smith, realized that our 1st grade students needed extra opportunities to read out loud. Mrs. Smith worked with 1st grade and 5th grade teachers to select students who would be good reading buddies for the program. Students were trained and began meeting with their 1st grade buddies in the first week of December. Students read together for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. The program has been a hit according to students and teachers alike. "I have been amazed at the commitment of our 5th grade students to help our 1st grader students" according to Mrs. Smith.

This program supports the following Great Expectations that we strive for at Chavez.

#4 We will cheer each other to success.

#5 We will help one another whenever possible.

Way to go 5th graders!

Lakeside Honor Band and Choir Perform At Chavez

The Lakeside Honor band and Choir performed a brief medley of Christmas music for Chavez students this past week. Chavez students learned about the different opportunities in both the band and choir they can look forward to when they become Middle School students. We were pleased to see many former Chavez students in both the band and choir. We were impressed by the quality of music both groups produced. Thank you Lakeside Directors, Mrs. Carter and Mrs. Jordan for a great show.
