Parent and student transition activities are being planned for the different grade levels.


  • Fifth grade students will visit IMMS on June 5 during the school day.
  • Second grade students will visit WIS on June 4 during the school day.


Indian Mound Middle School will host a parent meeting for incoming 6th graders on May 1 at 6:30pm at IMMS.


In addition to the second graders visiting with their class, Waubesa Intermediate School will also host an open house that is optional for families to attend on May 15 from 4pm to 5pm. Families will also have another opportunity to look around right before school starts at our supply dropoff on August 28 from 5:30 - 7:30.

Why: Meet the 3rd grade teachers and take a tour of Waubesa Intermediate School!


This open house is optional. In August, there will be another opportunity for you and your child to drop in, visit WIS, and meet homeroom teachers. More information on this opportunity will be provided at a later date.

A Note From Principal Nelson

Dear Conrad Elvehjem Primary School Families,


Can you believe it? We are close to wrapping up our first year together in our new school. Remember last year when we did not have a playground? Now we have beautiful new equipment for our students to exercise and play. Remember when the August weather did not cooperate, and we had to open the school with a dirt parking lot? Now we have plenty of space in our parking lots for all of our guests. Remember when we wondered if our students would find their way around the big new school? Now they walk the halls confidently as they follow their daily routines. Remember when, over the past several years, we have had different principals come and go? Now, I am excited to share that I am here to stay.


Beginning next school year, I get to be the CEPS Principal. I am ready to continue working with the amazing students (who make me smile every day), CEPS teachers and staff (who have been nothing short of supportive and encouraging during my change in roles this year), district administrative team (who have gone out of their way to provide their time, advice, and assistance), and you…the CEPS families! Because of this, I am confident that this transition to permanent principal for CEPS will be seamless for all of us. Thus, there is no time like the present to “re-introduce” myself!


I started my career at what used to be McFarland Primary School (MPS) where I was a special education teacher. I immediately felt at home due to the “McFarland Family” feel that embodies the way we work together. The fact that I felt appreciated and supported by my administrators is what kept me in McFarland, and I am honored to continue this trend. After three years, I became the Elementary Campus (i.e., what used to be both Conrad Elvehjem Early Learning Center and MPS) Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA). As TOSA, I worked with different principals over another three years to provide leadership in student behavior and projects to support the campus. When CE/MPS merged this year to become CEPS, I started the year as our first Associate Principal and stepped in as Interim Principal when that position opened in October. I feel fortunate to have worked alongside different administrators, learning the skills necessary to provide school leadership, and I have developed my own leadership style as well. I value relationships above all, and I have worked hard to develop them with the team here. Now, we are working together, at the right pace, to continually develop and improve our practices and systems with our eye on student achievement.


But what is a principal without some “fun facts?” Well, I grew up in Delavan, WI, and am currently the only sibling remaining in the state; my sister lives in Las Vegas (with my nephew, who is awesome!), and my brother lives with his wife in Japan where he is in the Marines. I love hanging out with my friends trying all the fun activities the Madison area has to offer (bring it on, summer, we need sunshine!). I have a unique pet…Luna is my hedgehog and believe it or not, she loves cuddles. I like watching competition cooking shows, reading, and organizing. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from UW-Madison, got my master’s degree in special education from UW-Whitewater, and completed Principal and Director of Instruction licensure programs at Viterbo University. Something very important to me is volunteering as a Big Brother with Big Brothers Big Sisters. My Little Brother and I love playing basketball, going to Skyzone, and cooking, and we both tried water-skiing for the first time last summer. Oh, and I cannot say no to cheese pizza, just try me!


I want to end by saying thank you.


Thank you to the community. You supported the referendum that allowed us to open our new school. You have remained understanding while CEPS has gone through many changes.


Thank you to the McFarland School District. There is something about this district that just “feels right.” Teachers come here, and they want to stay here.


Thank you to the CEPS staff. You ask me all the time how you can help, and you come to school every day ready to teach and love our students.


Most of all, thank you to the students. YOU are the reason I love what I do.

A Note From Principal Murphy

Dear Waubesa Families,


As most of you know, this is my last year working in the McFarland School District as I will retire at the end of June. I have been a teacher here for 19 years, teaching 3rd, 4th and mostly 5th grade before becoming the principal at Waubesa for 11 years. I have loved my time serving the students and their families throughout my career. This is a great community. Families are positively involved in the schools and in their children’s education. I feel lucky to have had the opportunity to serve you.


In looking at my time ahead, I am filled with mixed emotions. I am looking forward to more time to travel, ride my bike, read, kayak and hike, but I know I will miss the students, their families and the staff here at Waubesa.


My replacement has been hired. I believe he will be a great fit for the school and the community. Corey Shefchik comes to us from the Sun Prairie School District where he has several years of experience as a principal and assistant principal as well as multiple years of teaching experience.


On a separate note, the month of May can be an exceptionally busy time here at Waubesa. The number of field trips and other special events increase as the temperature (hopefully) increases. Please look carefully at the calendar of events and contact your child's homeroom teacher if you are interested in helping with any of them.


State testing was finished in April! We anticipate the results will be sent to us later in the summer. These results will then be sent on to you. We will now complete MAP testing and running records.


This is also the time of year when some students find it more difficult to complete homework and to stay focused and on task. We feel this school year has gone so well and we look for your support in finishing the year strong.

As we near the end of this school year, it is time to reflect and send our thanks to all those who have helped make a difference. This year, we are saying goodbye to someone that has had a positive impact on our school, our Principal, Ms. Murphy. For over thirty years, Ms. Murphy has been dedicated to providing the best possible outcomes for thousands of students at Waubesa and the greater McFarland School District.


Ms. Murphy has served in a variety of positions in the McFarland School District both in and out of the classroom. She spent 19 years as a classroom teacher, teaching 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade before moving into a teacher leader role. Passionate about mathematics, she pushed herself and student thinking as the District’s Math Coordinator before becoming the Principal of Waubesa Intermediate School in 2008. Outside of the classroom, Ms. Murphy was the Head Girls Basketball Coach for our Spartans, leading the team to a State Title in 1999. Through all these positions, it was clear Ms. Murphy loves our community and our students.


Personally, it was Ms. Murphy who gave me my first opportunity as a teacher as I was one of her first hires in the spring of 2008. Since then she has taught me what is takes to be truly excellent at the craft of teaching by constantly learning herself, putting the needs of our students above her own, and understanding that we must first know students in order to help them succeed. I am forever grateful for her example and leadership.


So from me, and ALL of Waubesa students and staff, past and present, thank you and congratulations, Ms. Murphy!

MAY 8 IS BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY!

Waubesa Intermediate School is proud to host a Bike to School event on Wednesday, May 8th starting at 7:15AM at the Village Hall. This event is to promote healthy living, safe travel to and from school and build our community into one that values the environment.


As a child I was not able to bike to school, because I lived too far from school. To meet the needs of those students who also live too far away, we will be continuing our tradition of an amazing meetup and bike train! The train will leave Village Hall at 7:35AM with a police escort! This way any student who, like me, lives too far away, can come to the Village Hall and enjoy a bike ride to school. Parents are welcome too!


No bike? No problem! We will also be having a group walk to school from Village Hall as well! In order to arrive at school on time, this group will be leaving at 7:30AM. This group will be led by staff and parents from our school.


For those who are able to come to the Village Hall, we will be having a raffle for great bike themed prizes. However, the best part of the event is simply riding to school with a great group of fellow schoolmates.


I look forward to seeing many of you at this event!

The 22nd annual WIS Olympiad will be held on May 31! This all-day event is one of our most anticipated days of the year.
