School Highlights
ODIORNE POINT STATE PARK
Souhegan's marine science students collected data on behalf of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute on Monday, October 23rd, on the abundance of invasive crabs at Odiorne Point State Park. The numbers of invasive crabs are on the rise and students were surprised by how few native crabs were observed. Students in marine science are learning why the Gulf of Maine is such an important marine environment and about the rapid changes that are being observed in the ecosystem.
GERMAN EXCHANGE PROGRAM
Our German guests have enjoyed the Souhegan community immensely. I want to give a big thank you to all the families who hosted students and teachers that have made the visitors feel welcome. We have a few slots open for our students to travel to Germany during April vacation. For more information, reach out to Marjie Hobbs or Sue Boswell (978-835-0133) from Hummingbird Travel.

Get To Know SHS
Meet the wonderful and talented staff members of SHS!
Andrew Tyler
What is your role at Souhegan?
Computer Science Teacher
How long have you been with Souhegan?
This is my first year!
What do you love about your job?
Working with high school students often means there are many more opportunities for classwork to be open-ended. High School students can often take work further in many different directions than I anticipate and that allows me to learn new things on a daily basis. People are amazing with what we can do, how we figure out challenges, and what we create and I get to be a part of that as an educator. Those "Ah ha!" moments that students have after working on a challenging task never get old.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I have a strong connection with all things outdoors. Not to sound cliché, but time outside really helps me 'recharge'. My mind settles down, everything I'm focused on gets set aside, and I get to just be an observer for a while. My favorite hobby is digital photography, something I taught myself. My primary photography subject is wildlife/nature and I've even been fortunate to sell some of my photos. I also enjoy building, creating, crafting, and gaming as well. I only started playing Dungeons and Dragons maybe 8 years ago now, but I love the interactive story telling behind it. Video games that have a story or fit in the Adventure genre are often a go to. Reading fills in the rest of the time, but most of my reading is done with audio books nowadays. When I can, I love to travel as well, most recent trips were a Safari to Kenya/Tanzania for 17 days and I also did a road trip with my mom visiting several national parks out west.
If you were given one wish what would it be?
I would wish people to be able to experience awe more often, even for things that are a bit more mundane or common place. How often do we think about that a computer is essentially minerals cleverly put together that can respond with electricity that sends information to other minerals THROUGH THE AIR so we can share a TikTok with the WORLD.
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?
“I never lose. I either win or I learn.” - One, I really like this as a way of seeing the opportunities to learn in mistakes or being wrong. I really think the best learning comes from trying for sake of testing an idea, and then getting information from the outcome to help you apply and new way to try after that. Two, I tend to be pretty competitive.
Community Council
This week at Community Council, we continued discussing our first proposal, the Referendum Proposal, which seeks to create a process for allowing whole school votes on proposals brought to Community Council. We will continue discussing this proposal at our next meeting on Monday, 10/30, from 3:05 to 3:45 in the Info Center.

The proceeds from the bracelets sales create fair-trade jobs for over 200 artists in Guatemala and Nicaragua and support college scholarships, secondary education programs, workers' rights initiatives, housing programs, environmental programs, and so much more.
