End of Year Assessments

Kindergarten began end of year assessments last week and they will continue into the coming week. We will be very busy testing the reading and reading skills of all of our students. The mCLASS results will come home to you after we have finished assessing the whole kindergarten. Our summative math assessment is also during this week. Both of these evaluations happen during the literacy and math blocks and the class is able to continue with their independent activities while the teachers work one-on-one with students.

Poppy Popcorn Claxton Fundraiser

Claxton is having a fundraiser for the next two weeks to try and raise money for our playground and for funds to become a Leader in Me School. These are projects that will directly affect your child in a super positive way. And Poppy Popcorn is THE BEST! If you havent tried it before, head on down Merrimon Avenue, it's right next to Urban Burrito. The owner, Ginger, is a long time Claxton parent, and she is generously donating 50% of the profits to Claxton. All you have to do is find a few friends and family members that would like to buy some popcorn, have them pay in advance and then deliver the popcorn when it comes in. Checks should be mad to Claxton PTO. The Tax Family loves the Asheville Mix!

What Are We Learning?

Daily 5

Students are working in small groups to learn new strategies to help them progress in reading. Our focus lessons are centered around several reading skills: reading nonsense words, being able to say all the sounds in a given word, and being able to retell a story and answer comprehension questions. We will continue to learn sight word phrases to help with fluency in reading.

We will finish Unit 4 this week and begin Unit 5. One new activity in Unit 5 is dictating sentences. I will say a sentence and the class will write it on their fundations white boards.

We will be reading Henry and Mudge books this week in preparation for our field trip to Diana Wortham Theater to see the performance. In writing, our class will draw and write about events in the book.

The students will be taking their math summatives throughout this week.
