February Principal's Message
February is the month when we know every day is a little warmer, and
stays light longer, and we are getting closer each day to spring. This is
the time of year when we start looking toward the end of the school
year and evaluate if the students are making the progress required to
finish strong. We appreciate what you do at home to help get
assignments complete and emphasize the importance of learning and
getting an education. For our students to have someone sit down and
read with them each day at home makes all the difference. We have
appreciated the efforts by parents to get their students here on time. It
is so important to develop that habit at a young age. I’m optimistic that
we are headed in the right direction.
As we think about the end of year proficiency tests we are all working
hard to help students do well. We appreciate the opportunity to meet
and hold parent conferences. We know that working together will help
each student do better and increase the chance for success. This is a
great time of year to be optimistic. I like the following quote from Jimmy
Dean, “I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails
to always reach my destination.”
Our February social skill is “How to Accept Consequences”. Talk to your
student about this skill and the steps taught to learn how to do it. I hope
you noticed the “Good Character is Golden” display in the entry foyer as
you attended parent conferences. We value the benefit of giving praise
and recognizing the student’s effort to choose good. We are lucky to
have the PTA support our efforts to teach social skills and for the great
parents that take a turn teaching these skills in the classrooms. Thanks
for all the things that are done in your homes and families to support
the efforts of the school. We recognize and appreciate what you do.

Lakeview Welcomes Mr. Barker
With the upcoming retirement of Mr. Daniels, we are excited to welcome Mike Barker as Lakeview's new principal!
Mr. Barker began his career teaching science and health at Dixon Middle School for four years. He then moved to Centennial Middle School when it first opened in 1996 and taught 7th grade science and a multimedia class teaching video editing. He remained at Centennial until 2016, when he moved to Westridge Elementary to serve on the administrative team as the STEM Coordinator. In 2017, he moved to Wasatch Elementary where he served as Assistant Principal.
Mike Barker attended BYU, where he received his bachelors degree in Biology/Secondary education. He has also received a Master of Education - Instructional Technology from Utah State University and a Master of Education - Educational Leadership from Brigham Young University. He received his Educational Administration License in 2015.
We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Barker to Lakeview!

Utah PTA Day at the Capitol and Leadership Convention
One of the main purposes of PTA is to advocate for education in Utah. To do this, we all need to learn the issues and communicate with our legislators. Come do both at Utah PTA Day at the Capitol on Tuesday, February 20, 2018 at the state capitol. We will learn about PTA's legislative priorities, hear from the Governor, and have lunch with our state senators and representatives! It's a fun way to get involved in politics and help your children in the process! Registration will be available after the holidays at www.utahpta.org. It's only $15 and includes lunch. Secondary students (i.e. grades 7-12) are also welcome and will have their own student track. It's a fantastic experience!
Utah PTA offers a Leadership Convention in May to prepare PTA members and board leaders to better serve at their schools and in our community. All PTA members are welcome and incoming PTA leadership is highly encouraged to attend. Utah PTA Convention will be May 23-24, 2018 at the Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo. Save the date!
