The Lumberjack Edge
Cedar Mill Elementary School
November 9, 2018
Dear Cedar Mill Community,
School and district report cards for the 2017-18 school year are available at: http://www.ode.state.or.us/data/reportcard/reports.aspx. (Select Beaverton in the District Selection drop-down menu). I welcome the opportunity to share this information with you on the progress we are making to improve academic achievement for each student in the District and at Cedar Mill.
State report cards began fifteen years ago when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), signed by President Obama on December 10, 2015, replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and affords states greater flexibility. ESSA encourages schools and educators to innovate and create systems that address local needs. As a part of this work, the Oregon Department of Education redesigned the School and District report cards to engage and inform families about their school’s approach to learning, academic and extracurricular offerings, and student performance. Reports cards also serve as an important tool for continuous improvement planning by local and state policymakers, in conjunction with the communities they serve.
At Cedar Mill, WE are committed to using this information to help tailor our school improvement plans and academic programs to meet the needs of every student. During the year I will communicate with you frequently about student achievement and programs in place at our school to foster student learning and success.
If you have questions about our report card, please contact me. You may also have suggestions for improvements. Please share them!
Sincerely,
Amy Chamberlain, Principal

Food Drive at Cedar Mill
Alexandra Lee and Grace Lavelle, two 7th grade students at Rachel Carson, are working with Cedar Mill Elementary and the Sunshine Pantry to conduct a food drive for Thanksgiving. Sunshine Pantry allows local families and individuals to come directly to the pantry and take the food items they specifically need. We will be collecting boxed and canned food donations November 13th through 20th. No glass jars, please.
Sunshine Pantry is one of the only food pantries that will collect fresh produce in our area. On November 20th ONLY, we will be collecting fresh produce.
Please drop of your donations in the collection bins located in the front lobby at Cedar Mill. For more information go to our website: https://sites.google.com/bsd48.org/cannedfooddrive/home
Thank you for your support!
Parents of 3rd and 5th Grade Students - CogAT Results
Your student recently took the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) Screening Form. The CogAT Screening form is a short form of the CogAT. Both the CogAT Screening Form and the complete CogAT measure students’ learned reasoning abilities developed through in-school and out-of-school experiences.
More information on your student’s scores
The sections in ParentVUE explain your student’s performance on the three subtests.
The Raw Scores section provides information on the number of items in each subtest, the number of items the student attempted to answer and the number of items the student answered correctly.
The Total Age Percentile Score section compares your student‘s performance with students across the nation who are the same age. The Total Age Percentile Score indicates the percentage of students in each comparison group whose scores fell at or below the score obtained by your student.
These scores provide one piece of information about your child's ability. There are students who receive average or below average scores on the CogAT Screener whose performance at school is consistently above average. There are also students who score very high on the CogAT Screener who are not performing well on daily school assignments. Many factors can affect a student's performance on a test. For example, the CogAT Screener is a timed test. In contrast, the state tests the students take in 3rd, 4th and 5th grade are "power tests" where students are allowed to continue as long as they are working productively.
The full version of the CogAT is used as part of TAG identification in the area of intellect.
3rd grade students who score at the 97th percentile and above and are not currently TAG in intellect will be invited to test in November with the full version of the CogAT.
5th grade students who score at the 97th percentile and above will be invited to test in November with the full version of the CogAT for potential TAG/Summa eligibility.
School Board Approves 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 School Calendars
At the October 22, 2018 Business Meeting, the School Board approved the Superintendent’s calendar recommendation for the 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 school years. Staff and community members overwhelmingly preferred Option 1 for both school years.
In the 2019-2020 school year, the first day for students will be Monday, August 26 and the last day for students will be Friday, June 12. In the 2020-2021 school year, the first day for students will be Monday, August 31 and the last day for students will be Friday, June 1. Option 1 provides 10 days for winter break in both school years.
Both calendars are attached below for your planning purposes. Please understand that budgetary and contractual obligations may impact the implementation of the final calendars.

Updated Head Lice Policy
Code: JHCCF
Adopted: 5/14/18
Pediculosis (Head Lice)
A student with nits and/or infested with live lice will be allowed to remain in school.
A student with a suspected case of head lice may be referred to designated trained staff for a screening. The screening will be done in a confidential manner by trained personnel.
School personnel will notify the parent or guardian of a student found with head lice and provide information on appropriate treatment. The student will be allowed to remain in school.
The suggested school measures for head lice control, as provided in Head Lice Guidance published by the Oregon Department of Education and the Oregon Health Authority, Public Health Division1 will be considered.
Stay Healthy this Cold & Flu Season
Cold and flu season has already begun, but there are things you can do to keep yourself and your children healthier. Prevention measures include washing your hands frequently, getting lots of rest, drinking plenty of fluids, and avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Home is the best place for a child who is ill. The Too Sick for School informational flyer has guidelines to help you make the decision about when to keep your child home from school.
