Sam Barlow Speech and Debate
Weekly Update: September 14-18, 2020
Now is the Best Time to Join Barlow Speech and Debate
Whether you love or hate public speaking, there is no denying that you will be required to speak publicly and think critically about what others say throughout your entire life. This activity gives you the ability to develop essential advocacy skills and build your confidence to tackle college interviews, get that dream job, or convince your sweetheart to marry you.
For my future debaters:
You've got opinions. We've got the platform for you to express them!
Barlow Speech and Debate gives you resources to fact check those opinions and vet them through a variety of educated perspectives. We give you the structure to formulate and articulate your ideas and the guidance to outwit your opponents and win hardware (trophies, medals, ribbons, scholarships).
Warning!
You will become smarter and more confident. We ask you to use these powerful skills responsibly.

Meet Your SBHS Speech and Debate Coaching Staff for 2020-2021
Rachel Wilczewski - Speech & Debate Coach
Whether you are brand new to this activity or a seasoned veteran, we are very excited for you to join us this year! We have a full season of virtual competition ahead of us and your coaching staff is busy thinking up creative speech ideas, researching debate topics, and finding award-winning pieces for performance. All we need is you.
This is my 23rd year at Sam Barlow High School and my 31st year coaching speech and debate. I love this activity because I see what it can do to build life-long confidence in students. The skills this activity fosters are both valuable and applicable to every student's life and career. I have dedicated my life to awakening the power that individuals have by using their voices to advocate for their beliefs and affect change in our world. I am extremely proud of the students that matriculate from this program.
I hope to see everyone at our first meeting Thursday 10/1:)

Caitlin Easter - Speech Coach
I'm Coach Catie and this is my sixth year coaching speech and debate for Barlow! My experience dates back to high school when I joined the team after Wilczewski appropriated me from theatre. In high school, I competed in Dramatic Interpretation, Parliamentary Debate, and--my favorite--Duo Interpretation. I have been mainly coaching interp events the past few years but have experience judging and coaching all forms of individual events and debate. I have found that the Oregon speech and debate family is the absolute best group of people and so dedicated to leaving this world a better place than we found it through education, motivation, and community. Looking forward to the new frontier of an online season! Right now my best days for coaching are Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7-8 PM but that schedule can shift a bit depending on my trial schedule that week.

Kanen McReynolds - Debate & Extemp Speech Coach
Howdy partners, I’m coach Kanen. I’m a Barlow graduate that competed all throughout high school, and now I’ve come back to coach for the past few seasons. During my time on the team, I mainly competed in Parliamentary debate, Extemp, ADS, and Impromptu. I am also able to coach LD and POFO. (Essentially every non-interp event and CX) I was a traditional debater, and I am a mostly traditional coach. I believe in truth over tech and try my best to instill the want to have a deep understanding of the world around us. To me, in order to be the best debater you can be, you must have the knowledge and care about the issues you are discussing. I expect consistent growth throughout the year, which doesn’t always mean placing well at tournaments. Growth is expanding your knowledge, realizing your strengths and using them to the best of your ability, and accepting weaknesses and wanting to work on them. In short, be willing to be coached.
Our first meeting for interested and returning students will be held on October 1, 2020!
