This is your principal, Mr. Taylor, with your announcements and reminders for the week of May 28. As a reminder, we will be off on Monday, May 29th for Memorial Day and we hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday weekend. Also, there will be no school on Thursday, June 1st as we celebrate the graduation of the Winston Churchill Class of 2023. Graduation will begin promptly at 9 am in the stadium, and will be simulcast on a video link available on our school website.
Students - Three quick reminders - don't forget that all of the Spring semester SSL forms are due to the school by Friday, June 2. The activity buses after school will stop running after Wednesday, May 31, and all school lockers need to be cleaned out by Friday June 9th.
We want to congratulate Bradan Welby, and Hallie Muniz for their performances at the State Track competition, and we want to send a huge Bulldog congratulations to Andrew Wu and Ethan Han for winning the state title in Doubles Tennis.
I also want to congratulate our WCHS Theater program for their nomination for the Brandon Victor Dixon Award for Best Musical. They will be performing a number from the musical on June 3rd at the National Theater as part of the final competition. We wish them all good luck.

LOCKER CLEAN OUT
Any students utilizing a locker this school year should have all contents removed by Friday, June 9th. After June 9th, any remaining contents will be discarded or donated. Thank you for your cooperation.

ANGST Screening - POSTPONED
Due to low registration, our screening of the ANGST movie will be postponed until the fall. We look forward to screening this important movie and partnering with the Mia Foundation to support student mental health in the fall.
ANGST is designed to address the silent and invisible mental health challenges of anxiety. This uplifting and engaging documentary is intended to raise awareness with the goal of helping people identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety while encouraging help-seeking behavior. The film includes interviews with kids, teens, experts, and parents.
Student Lunch Accounts:
Several student lunch accounts have negative balances. Please check your School Bucks Account to ensure you child(ren) have funds to pay for the meals they are receiving. If you qualify for Free and Reduced Meals and have not applied, the balances are forgiven once an application is accepted. Thank you for your cooperation!
Local Summer School Program
Attention Churchill Community! We are happy to announce that we will once again hold our Winston Churchill High School Local Summer Program during the Summer of 2023. This program allows students to take courses for credit and enrichment that will be taught my our amazing Churchill staff. Some classes that will be offered this summer are Honors Health (both A and B), Honors Geometry (both A and B), College Essay Writing and many more. Save the date for the annual Scotland Juneteenth Celebration and Juneteenth 5K on June 19th!!
Celebrating the past and present of the first places African-Americans owned land in Montgomery County, the Scotland community of Potomac, Md., is announcing a significant expansion of our annual Scotland Juneteenth Heritage Festival for 2023. www.juneteenthscotland.org
Featuring a children’s carnival and music performance, as well as art exhibitions, food, sports, and presentations on Black history in this region, the events for the federal holiday on Monday, June 19, will be spread across the Cabin John Regional Park, Cabin John Village, and the Scotland community on Seven Locks Road.
The First Juneteenth 5K - As a part of the larger festival and series of events, Glenstone Museum, with help from the WCHS track and cross country teams, is holding the first ever Juneteenth 5K on June 19. The Scotland Juneteenth 5K will traverse the historic Black neighborhood of Scotland, including the 100-year-old Scotland AME Zion Church on 7 Locks Road in Potomac. The event will benefit the rebuilding of the church, which was flooded in 2019, and needs to be rebuilt.

Addressing Hate and Bias Incidents - No Place For Hate
We continue to address and confront incidents of hate and bias at Winston Churchill and across the county. WCHS is committed to being a No Place For Hate school, and will continue to have PRIDE lessons, discussions and activities to promote an anti-hate and anti-bias culture. If you haven't yet, I strongly encourage all families to read the MCPS message on antisemitism and hate, and discuss your expectations with your child. If you experience Hate or Bias, or observe it happening - please don't hesitate in reporting it to administration and the school. Only by working together can we stamp hate and bullying as a school.

Student Panel on College Applications: All Juniors are invited to join us at lunch on Thursday, May 25th for a student panel on the college application process from our departing Seniors. Come at lunch to the auditorium as they discuss tips and strategies, lessons learned, and ways to survive and thrive during the college application process.
AVAILABLE PARKING- Class of 2024- Starting May 30th:
Starting Tuesday, May 30th, current Juniors (Class of 2024) will be permitted to park in designated student spaces within the Churchill Parking lot and in the Churchill defined street parking areas. This parking is not guaranteed and will be available on a first come, first served basis. No permit is necessary. Please refer to this specific end of year Parking Guide to see which areas have been approved for student parking. Any student that fails to park in approved parking spaces may lose eligibility for a lot space for the 2023-24 school year and/or may get ticketed by Montgomery County Traffic Enforcement. Winston Churchill HS is not responsible if a student receives a ticket for any reason. This parking is only available from May 30th through June 15th. Permits will be required for the 2023-24 school year. See application information below.
2023-24 Student Parking Application Information
The 2023-24 Student Parking Application will be opened on Tuesday, May 30th at 3:30pm. Only current Juniors (Class of 2024) are permitted to apply. All seniors must not have any obligations and have completed the SSL hour gradation requirement. Eligible applications will be randomly approved using www.random.org. However, preference will be given to seniors who are dually enrolled or have a school-sponsored internship. Senior siblings are encouraged to apply individually to increase approval chances, although only one student per family will be approved for a permit.
New for the 2023-24 school year: In order to address traffic flow concerns, and ensure safety - Students will be randomly assigned either a street parking permit, or an assigned lot spot. (pages 2-3 of the Expectations and Enforcement for Student Parking Permits/Parking Guide). All street parking spaces will be first come, first served on a daily basis. Any student that parks in the staff spaces, visitor spaces, or assigned student spaces without the necessary permit, or any street parker that parks outside the designated Churchill areas will be subject to consequences such as a violation sticker, towing and/or loss of permit for the remainder of the year.
Students will be emailed parking information with instructions for payment and permit pick-up over the summer. Students not approved for a parking permit will be placed on a waiting list. There is a $75 non-refundable fee. If a parking permit is needed for medical reasons, students are instructed to apply for an ADA placard through the MVA. Both short and long term assignments can be approved. Once the MVA assigns an ADA placard, parking is permitted in the on-campus ADA spaces. Space is not guaranteed and is on a first come, first served basis. Any misrepresentation or falsification of records will result in the loss of parking privileges and parking permit. Please read over the Expectations and Enforcement for Student Parking Permits/Parking Guide for the 2023-24 school year.

- All SSL Forms for service completed after June 1, 2022, through the end of the 2022-2023 school year, are REQUIRED to be submitted to the school SSL Coordinator no later than the first Friday in June (June 2, 2023).

School Cash Online Information (SCO)
MCPS transitioned to a new online payment system called SchoolCash Online (SCO) for school-related fees such as fundraisers, field trips, obligations, etc. (Please note that the new payment system is NOT related to school cafeteria accounts)
As of today, 79.06% of Churchill families have successfully registered on SchoolCash Online (SCO)! Registration takes just a few minutes, but a SCO Pin number is needed. This PIN number is different from the student ID Number. Help us get 100% of our Churchill families registered on SCO. Resources for Youth Substance Use and Overdose Prevention and Response
As overdose events involving students continue to occur, we would like to share resources in (English and Spanish) about illicit fentanyl and substance use/overdose prevention. The slide set includes critical information about substance use that we would also like you to share with your families, students, and staff, including mental health crisis and opioid overdose response resources.
Additional resources for youth and families are on the Montgomery Goes Purple website and in our office’s December 9, 2022, Community Message. Montgomery Goes Purple hosted a hybrid virtual/in-person workshop for staff, students, and family members on January 28th at Clarksburg High School. This event included an expert panel discussion, updates from community partners, and emergency medication naloxone (Narcan) training and materials distribution.
If you missed this event, additional community discussions are being scheduled and videos of the event will be made available soon.

Parking and Traffic Reminders for WCHS
Drop-Off and Pick-Up - Please be careful and respectful during drop off and pick up each day. MPD traffic division will be out issuing citations for illegal driving and parking. We have had incidents of rude behavior - and we ask everyone to model the civility and respect that we expect from our students!

Important Reminders - We strongly recommend that you plan to drop off your student(s) before 7:30 and pick them up after 2:40. Traffic congestion can be bad, especially as we head into colder weather and rainy or inclement weather. Please do not drop off your student in traffic on Gainsborough, Tuckerman or Victory - as this can lead to unsafe conditions.
Visitor Parking
We ask our visitors to use the NEW Visitor parking lot by the flagpole near the main entrance. Please do not park in the other lots as they are designated and assigned to specific staff and students.
Student Parking
Student parking is limited to seniors that have been approved for and picked up a parking permit. School permitted areas, which require the parking permit, include both the school lots and the surrounding streets. Any student who parks in the school lot or on the surrounding streets without an approved permit displayed may be subject to ticketing or towing. Seniors that have been approved, but have not yet picked up a parking permit, may not park at school until the permit has been received.
ATTENDANCE REMINDERS AND INFORMATION

Attendance Reminders:
- Tardies - Three (3) unexcused tardies equal one (1) unlawful absence.
- All students MUST have an EARLY DEPARTURE Pass to leave campus. The Attendance staff will call to verify written requests.
- Students leaving early or arriving late must sign in at the attendance office.
- To participate in any athletic event, extracurricular activity, scheduled school activity, or practice, students must be on time and attend all scheduled classes on the day of the event.
- To help ensure a safe and orderly departure from school for all students, early dismissals must be done prior to 2:00 p.m.; otherwise, the regular dismissal procedure will need to be followed.

MVA FORM
Please complete Verification of Identity and/or School Attendance/ DL-300 for those students’ applying for a Learner’s Permit.
Completed forms should be brought to one of the counseling secretaries before school, during lunch or after school for processing. Applicants should be prepared for a 24 hour “turn-around” time for their form to be processed and need to plan accordingly.
FOOD AND NUTRITION SERVICES
MCPS will no longer provide free meals for all students.
DFNS and the school cafeteria will be returning to providing full meals and wide menu of "a la carte" menu items available for students to purchase. Don't forget that families will need to either send in a check, or sign up and pay on-line using the MySchoolBucks program. Here is a link to sign-up and pre-load payments for your student.

FREE AND REDUCED MEALS APPLICATION
Apply online NOW so that benefits will be in place when school starts! Families who meet
certain federal income standards are eligible for free meal benefits. All children use their MCPS ID number at the register so confidentiality is maintained and no child is overtly identified as receiving free or reduced-price meals. Only one application is needed for all students in a household.
A new application must be completed for any family requesting assistance this school year. The online application is now open for families to submit applications. www.MySchoolApps.com

Meal prices:
Breakfast—$1.30; Lunch—$2.55 (Elementary), $2.80 (Middle and High) Beginning this year, students in Maryland who qualify for reduced-price meals will not be charged for breakfast or lunch meals!
BUS ROUTES, DROP OFF and PICK UP, and ACTIVITY BUSES
Parents are reminded that there will be heavy vehicle and walking traffic around the school during drop off and pick up times and to allow extra time at the beginning of the school year. For bus riders, it is important that they review their stops and know their bus route information.
New for the 2022-23 school year: Activity buses will be provided on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons, starting September 12th, 2022 through May 31st, 2023. Please review the full activity bus schedules. Activity Buses DO NOT run on early release or non-instructional days. Activity buses depart from the Churchill Bus Loop at 4:35pm. Activity bus routes are TBD at this time.
PARENTVUE
Don’t forget to access your ParentVUE account and make sure they are active and working. Please let us know if you are having trouble. Please review the information and make sure that the contact and emergency information in ParentVUE is updated and current for the upcoming school year. Of critical importance is having the correct e-mail address and phone number so that our information is correct. Parents can also complete the Directory Withholding information in ParentVUE, if they choose to do so.
STUDENT LOCKERS
Lockers are not automatically assigned to students as most do not utilize them. However, any student may request the use of a school locker at any time during the year. Complete the following Student Locker Request when you are interested in being assigned a locker. Request form must be accessed by the student using their MCPS google email. The Montgomery County Fair Ice cream Dairy barn is open on Friday August 11 at 3pm through Saturday August 19.
We need student and adult volunteers every day from 11am- 11pm. We serve ice cream and everyone has a great time.

The Caucus of African American Leaders (CAAL) has been an active community organization at the forefront of human and civil rights and social and racial justice for over ten years. This year, CAAL is planning a commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the August 1963 March on Washington (MOW) in our state’s capitol. This two-day commemoration event will include a reenactment of the March and its program Saturday, August 26th followed by a Worship service Sunday, August 27th. The theme for this event is “Together We Can Be The Dream As We Commemorate, Educate, Activate.”
Middle and High school students (grades 6-8 and 9-12) who reside in Maryland and meet the qualifications are invited to be a part of this historical event by participating in the MOW Youth Essay and Art competition. Students are asked to reflect and respond through original creative writing or art expression to the following:
“Since the 1963 March on Washington, what has changed? We are still marching for jobs, freedom, housing, social and racial justice, voting rights, and more than sixty years later. As a call to action, how would you make changes to commemorate, educate or activate, working together to achieve the dream?”
Parents, Guardians, or Adults requesting an application for students to participate in the MOW Youth Essay and Art Competition must send an email to apowell230@gmail.com with the subject of (MOW Youth Essay and Art Competition).

WHEN: Youth Essay and Art Competition starts on Friday, May 19 and ends no later than 11:59 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2023
WHERE: Winners will be awarded and all participants will be recognized in Annapolis and Glen Burnie in person, on August 26 and 27, 2023 during the two-day event.

Organized by Stanford University undergraduate and graduate students, Qualia Global Scholars is a selective pre-collegiate virtual summer mentorship program matching talented students in grades 6-12 with Stanford mentors. The program features personalized mentorship, interdisciplinary research, project-based learning, and guidance on college applications. The program aims to empower students to become future global leaders by teaching them about leadership & problem solving, emerging areas in STEM & liberal arts, critical thinking & communication skills, and real-world impact through research & innovation. FalconVision Tutoring, is a student-run tutoring branch under the nonprofit Family Learning Solutions (FLS), and based in Poolesville High. As an organization, we’re dedicated to helping students succeed academically through direct sessions (online and free!) with our well-qualified tutors, over both the school year and/or summer. We always make sure to pair these tutors and students up based on subject-preference and unique learning style, so everyone can have the best experience. Ultimately, we hope to create a community of learners who can help one another overcome school-based challenges. - University of Maryland, Baltimore County’s Culture, Child, and Adolescent Development Lab is currently, recruiting for Project ARISE to understand the unique experiences of Asian American families since the COVID-19 outbreak. They are specifically recruiting Korean and Filipino parents and teens to participate in our project. Parents and teens will each complete a 30-40 minute survey and can also take part in interviews if they're interested. COVID SAFETY REMINDERS and 22-23 UPDATES FOR OUR COMMUNITY:
- If you do test positive, please continue to report your status by using the MCPS COVID REPORTING FORM
Do not come to school if sick. With COVID cases and variants still occurring, it is important to not report to school if your student has any signs of illness. In addition to the standard COVID symptoms (cough, fever, loss of taste and smell), signs of illness include: sore or scratchy throat, running nose, headache, chills and body aches. If your child has any of these symptoms, please keep them home until it can be confirmed they do not have COVID-19.
Wear an enhanced mask/face covering. All students and staff will be allowed to choose whether to wear a mask while in school. If you have concerns about exposure or immune levels, we recommend to wear a mask. In some cases, students returning from quarantine will be required to wear masks for certain periods. Masks will continue to be available on-site for those that need them.
Practice good hand and health hygiene. Wash hands frequently with soap and water, use hand sanitizer when soap and water is unavailable. Do not cough or sneeze around others or into your hands. Dispose of any tissue or items used for cough, sneezing or nasal use.
