Wonders
This week in Wonders, we learned about Fantasy (animals or characters do things that are human-like and not real), Fables (teach us a life lesson) and Realistic Fiction (not true, but could have happened). We read some great stories that helped us learn about traditions and cultures. In addition, we started working in our "Fluency Binders". Each binder contains either syllables, words (nonsense and real), phrases, and passages. Students time themselves (1 minute times), 5 times and try to improve their accuracy and amount of syllables/words/phrases/passages read each time. Please read as much as you can with your child at home! It is also great for your child to listen to reading (can be you, another family member or a friend!). We also started our small reading groups. Kids will be reading with me in small groups working on fluency, comprehension, and reading strategies. The books they will be reading will be staying at school. Once our routines are more established, we will be incorporating additional small groups with chapter books.
Fire Prevention
The Eagle River Area Fire Department stopped by this week to pilot their new Fire Prevention Kahoot. We had a great time and learned a lot! Thanks ERAFD!
Boxtops for Education!
A note went home earlier this week regarding Boxtops for Education. We will be collecting Boxtops monthly. Please send your Boxtops in baggies of 50. Please make sure that they Boxtops are cut and labeled with the number of Boxtops inside (50) and "Simac". Let me know if you have any questions and don't forget to ask your family members to help you save! The money we raise from Boxtops helps pay for field trips. We are also saving for new playground equipment!
Typing Agent
This week, we began a new program called "Typing Agent". This is a web-based keyboarding program. Your child's log-in information was sent home in their planner on Thursday. I stapled their log-in information in their planners, as well as instructions and a code for you (parents/guardians) to set up an account to monitor their progress. We will be doing this once a week during our computer lab time. Students must log-in through the following link:
(NO) Homework
While I do not require homework, I ask you to do the following things at home with your child on a nightly basis, or as regularly as you can:
- Read! Read! Read!
- practice writing their name in cursive
- practice multiplication facts
These things can be done with a brother, sister, grandparent, aunt, uncle, etc. - anyone willing to help!
Science - States of Matter
This week, we took our states of matter assessment. Overall, students did a great job! We will be starting a social studies unit next, more information to follow!
Math
In math, we are continuing to work on place value, number lines, and greater than or less than. Please continue to practice these concepts, as well as multiplication facts at home with your child. We have been making our own multiplication flashcards on index cards. I punched holes in the cards and put them on a ring for each child. Every ring should be complete through the "2's". When kids have mastered a "Multiplication Mountain" they can request to "climb" the mountain (fluently and accurately go through those fact flashcards with me). Thanks for your help and support!
