Edition 21 - Week of 2/17/2020
Leadership Corner
Happy Valentine's Day! I think I can speak for the entire staff when I say we love your children. It is our honor and privilege to get to spend our day with our amazing students. It has been an incredible week to celebrate the learning and growth this week with our 100th Day Celebrations.
Kindness was abundant on both campuses. Congratulations to our middle school students for their awesome effort in raising money for Slammin' Fammin'. We are so proud of their kind hearts and entrepreneurial spirit.
Mrs. McCrary's class spent time this morning creating comfort bags for the homeless. What a wonderful way to share love to others.
Congratulations to our Battle of the Book (BOB) teams. All teams will be advancing to the Grand Battle. We are so proud of you. 3rd Grade is entering Grand Battle in 2nd Place, Fourth Grade is 1st and 5th Grade is 1st. Congratulations to all of the students and coaches.
The New Vision Girl's Basketball Team is halfway through the 2020 season. The A-team is currently sitting at 3-3 in the NCIL Conference. The mix of returning players and new additions are beginning to mesh and continue to improve each game. It will be exciting to see what this team looks like once the playoffs are here.
The B-team has been busy working on fundamentals this season. This year brought us a lot of first year basketball players excited to learn the game of basketball. They have been improving every single practice and game.
Our next home game will be 2/20 vs Dayspring with the B-team kicking off the action at 4. We would love for you to come and cheer on the Nighthawks!

Guns in the home * DISCLAIMER * Sensitive topics will be discussed in this part of the newsletter Did you know in 2019, 37% of Americans had 1 or more guns in their home? (www.statisa.com) Or that children as young as 3 years old are strong enough to pull the trigger of a firearm? (www.healthychildren.org) Even more disturbing, is that every day, 8 children and teens are accidentally killed due to an unlocked gun or unsupervised adult in the home (www.Bradyunited.org) It’s clear children have access to firearms in their homes and we all know the consequences can be tragic if not handled properly. On Feb. 1, 2020, a 5 year old unintentionally shot and killed himself in a car while he was unsupervised parked in the driveway of his home. On January 31, 2020, a 2 year old unintentionally shot and killed himself with a loaded handgun found in a motel room while his mom and mom’s friend were in the room. And on January 30, 2020, a 4 year old shot and killed himself with a gun found in a bedroom closet in his home while his father and younger brother were in the home. (All from www.everytownresearch.org) And I’m not just talking about unintentional shootings either. The risk of a teenager dying by suicide is 4-10 times higher in homes with guns (www.healthychildren.org). Seperately, a study done by Harvard showed that 82% of suicides in children aged 17 and younger used a family member’s firearm to committ suicide. Now I am not here to steer you away from owning guns when you have children as that is your right. I would just like to pass on some tips to be mindful of when you have children in the home as well. Safe storage- All guns in the home should be kept in a safe that your children do not have access to The AAP recommends parents to store their firearms unloaded and locked up, with the ammunition stored separately (www.healthychildren.org) It’s not hard to figure out family passcodes so be aware of that if you have older children and your gun safe is in an visible place Never tell your children where the keys are to access the firearms Trigger locks or cable locks are also alternatives if you don’t have safes Be mindful of where you keep your firearm in the vehicle. If possible, follow the same above rule and keep it in a safe Don’t assume hiding your gun is enough Research shows that 3 out of 4 children aged 5-14 know where firearms are hidden in the home and 1 in 3 have handled a firearm, many without a parents permission (www.healthblog.org) Storing your firearm unloaded is the safest option to avoid accidents. Be cautious of guns marked “childproof”, this doesn’t make them completely foolproof Talk to your children Remind your children that if they ever come across a gun, to stay away from it and tell an adult immediately, even if it looks like a toy Repeat this often to your children and keep in mind, curiosity will get the best of them regardless of what you tell them. The more you repeat it, the more we can ensure they are hearing the message What about guns in homes other than mine? This topic was actually brought up to me by a parent here at New Vision with concerns that maybe their children would have access to firearms at their friends houses and it’s a valid concern. More than a third of all unintentional shootings of children occur in homes of their friends, relatives, and neighbors (www.healthychildren.org) There is nothing wrong with asking another parent if they have unlocked firearms in their homes. Just like you’d ask about pets, allergies, or other safety issues, add one more important question before your child visits that home. It could save your child’s life. The goal isn’t to shame other parents who may have a gun but preventing injuries and deaths. As always, I’m always here to answer any further questions that may come up!

NVCS Board Elections
MEMO
To: New Vision Parents/Guardians
From: NVCS Board of Directors
Date: Feb 4, 2020
Subject: Open 2020-21 Board of Director Positions
New Vision Charter School is moving forward with great success and needs your help to keep up our progress. Students and staff are enjoying our new 4-8 building and our K-3 facility is already brimming with new students. NVCS is continuing to grow and we’ve received another recognition as a 2019 School of Distinction. We want to continue our success for years to come and we’re looking for parents to join our Board of Directors.
As a charter school, NVCS is governed by our parents and community. Each year the board opens 3 positions that are ending their terms. This is your opportunity to be part of the decision-making process for New Vision and its future. As a member of the Board of Directors, your life and business experience play an important role, and your opinion and contributions are highly valued. NVCS enjoys an increasingly diverse student population and we hope to have a board that reflects that same growing diversity. We invite you to consider running for a position on the Board.
There are two (2) 3-year term positions and one (1) 1-year term opening in May 2020. The process is relatively simple, apply for a position and participate in the election process in April. You may also want to attend the orientation session at the March 30th Board meeting at 5:30 pm to ask questions and learn more about what is involved in serving on the New Vision Board of Directors.

Work with TSD school board, the Boys & Girls Club and other agencies on matters that pertain to NVCS
Establish school policies that govern the manner in which we operate as an organization
Collaborate with our Executive Director in establishing standards and best-in-class strategies for continued improvement as a top-tier charter school.
What is expected of a board member?
Attend and actively participate in regularly scheduled, monthly Board meetings. (3-4 hours/month)
Prepare for the meetings beforehand by reviewing the agenda and Board packet. (1-2 hours/month)
Serve as liaison to one of our standing committees (School Accountability/SAC, Finance, Public Relations, Committee of 2 (2-3 hours/month)
Participate in additional meetings/discussions with external agencies as required (1-2 hours/month)

Random Acts of Kindness
Did you know kindness affects our brain positively? Kindness increases oxytocin which lowers blood pressure, and increases self-esteem and optimism, according to studies at Dartmouth University. They also found that helping others makes a person feel stronger, more energetic, and calmer.
The week of Feb 17th is Kindness Week, with Random Acts of Kindness observed on Monday February 17th. We will be talking with students about this during the week. We would love for you as parents and guardians to also discuss this special week with your child at home. What are some ways they can be kind to their classmates this week? What could they do for their community to promote kindness? How can they show kindness to the school staff and school property? I'm sure they'll realize they're already doing a lot of those things already! If you want to take it a step further and use a kindness calendar for your family at home, here is a great resource for you: https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/printables
