Un Mensaje de Directora Sarlos

Dear Parents,

It was so lovely to see our students celebrating El Dia del Amor y Amistad this week!

Several other exciting things happened this week.

Our 6th-grade Spanish Immersion students from the middle school came and presented their animal reports in Spanish to our Kindergarteners. Two 6th graders were grouped with a handful of kindergarteners. One class participated outside and undercover and the other class was divided into two rooms to make sure they could all gather safely. It was such a joy to see the seed of how the students in the program can remain connected and the older students can be role models for our youngest ones. A great time was had by all.

And finally, we have parents coming into the building to teach Art Literacy again! We are so grateful to all of the PTO and Art Literacy Volunteers who are making this possible.

The projects and discussions children are having during Black History Month have been so meaningful as well.

We are cautiously planning for some mini assemblies too!

Book Fair Start Feb 28

Our book fair is scheduled for Feb 28-March 4. Students and staff can visit the book fair in person. Each class will have an opportunity to visit the book fair during their weekly library time and during the lunch recess each day.

Black History Month Resources

February is Black History Month. Numerous classroom discussions and activities this month connect to Black history across grades and curriculum. Attention to Black history is not limited to this month as we continue affirming that Black lives matter, and that we will keep growing as a community of learners committed to being anti-bias and anti-racist in all that we do. Read about district-wide efforts focused on Diversity Equity and Inclusion here and make a point to have some conversations with your child about the importance of celebrating Black History Month. Not sure where to start? Here's a resource that may be helpful.

Ask your child about which books they read and discussed in their library time this week.

Youth Survey

As part of LOSD’s efforts to create a culture of belonging and to achieve equitable academic outcomes, we will once again administer the Youth Truth survey to all staff, parents, and students in grades 3-12. The Family Survey link is ytsurvey.org/losdfamily22, and it will be accessible beginning Monday, February 28. The YouthTruth survey is confidential, and responses from children and parents will be held in the strictest confidence. We encourage everyone to participate. This will be an important piece of information for administrators to improve our students' experiences at school.

Elementary students in grades 3-5 will also complete the survey between February 28 and March 25. This is a vital opportunity for students to provide feedback and help guide the school’s improvement plan. The survey will take 15-30 minutes to complete and will be offered during school hours.

*Please note that parents may opt their child out of the survey if they would like. Click here for the opt-out form.
