"UNDER CONSTRUCTION"
A letter from Mrs. Dobbs
Families of JC McKenna,
We have successfully completed the first month of school. Our staff and students have been adjusting to the demolition and construction fairly well. The hallways are a little cramped and the 8th graders complain that the 6th graders don’t move quickly enough but we are working through it. Too be fair the 8th graders have to walk further and 6th graders are pretty much in one hallway so their perspectives on time vary. The portable classrooms are working out well, they are loud inside but everyone is adjusting. Thank you to all of the families that are helping out with drop off and pick up. It certainly has improved from day one! Second Street between Liberty and Lincoln will continue to be busy throughout the day as we have many deliveries with lots of big trucks and machinery. You probably want to avoid this area as much as possible.
Crossing guards have been added at First Street in the morning directly in front of the school and at the crossing at First and Highland. At the end of the day we have a crossing guard at First and Highland and Second and Highland. There are a lot of students that use the Second and Highland crossing to get to their practices after school. Our staff will continue to watch the patterns of our students and the traffic and adjust as necessary. Thank you to Evansville Police Department for helping out the first couple of weeks! The city put in a curb cut and painted a cross walk on Second Street. We have an amazing community that focuses on supporting our youth!
The sixth graders will be participating in Outdoor Day on October 7. The seventh graders were able to participate in the annual Car Show which was held at Creekside this year. Thank you for the venue! Eighth graders enjoyed a show at American Players Theater on October 2. Lots of fun things going on at JC McKenna. Take a look at the Evansville Community School District Facebook page to see some of the great things happening in all of our schools.
It is hard to believe but fall sports will be ending soon and wrestling and basketball will be starting before we know it. Be sure that your athlete has all of their paperwork completed as they will not be able to practice without it. Look for an email from our Activities & Athletic Director, Andie Varsho. Sixth graders are able to participate in wrestling but have to wait until seventh grade to join basketball.
As always, thank you for sharing your child with us each day. We appreciate and need your support. Please don’t hesitate to call or email with any questions, concerns or fun stories that get shared at home.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Joanie Dobbs, Principal

A Message from the Dean of Students
Hello,
Most of you know me as Mr. Demmin, Physical Education and Health teacher here at JC McKenna Middle School, a position I had held since being hired in 2001. Now, I would like to introduce myself as the Dean Of Students at JC McKenna. The position was newly created this year and I am excited to face the challenges it presents and also the ability to connect with students on a different level. I work with Mrs. Dobbs as well as the rest of our staff in helping students succeed. A few of my main areas of focus are monitoring attendance as well as athletic eligibility. I also work with students and staff on any disciplinary issues that may arise. I enjoy working with middle school students to help them be successful here at JC McKenna as well as preparing them to be successful in their daily lives. I believe respect for one's self and then others is paramount to accomplishing that goal. I am enjoying my new role and look forward to continuing to work with students and families here at JC McKenna. Please feel free to contact me any time or stop in and say hi.

Evansville Education Foundation Grants for 2019-2020 School Year
Thanks to the generosity of our community, the Evansville Education Foundation (EEF) has granted ECSD teachers thousands of dollars to explore innovative programs outside of the standard curriculum again this year. This year, grants ranged from sessions with an Overture Center musician to escape room-style problem solving kits. EEF grants are selected based on their academic focus and ability to impact large numbers of students. As usual, the energetic and creative ECSD staff rose to the challenge: grants cover all grade levels and learning styles to help every student do their best.
