Leadership Message
It's time to introduce the new "Principal's Pick".... One by Kathryn Otoshi
Blue is a quiet color. Red’s a hothead who likes to pick on Blue. Yellow, Orange, Green, and Purple don’t like what they see, but what can they do? When no one speaks up, things get out of hand — until One comes along and shows all the colors how to stand up, stand together, and count.
As budding young readers learn about numbers, counting, and primary and secondary colors, they also learn about accepting each other's differences and how it sometimes just takes one voice to make everyone count.
I can't wait to share this book with the kids.
In Christ,
Mrs. Tracy Melnyk, Principal

News from your SLS Faith Team
The SLS Faith Team has some exciting initiatives coming up for February. The first is a Prayer Box. It will be located in the front foyer and everyone is welcome to put the names of loved ones in the box that you would like us to keep in our minds and hearts during morning prayer. The second is Snack and Pray. We will be visiting classrooms on February 5th and 26th during DEAR time to share a prayer and a snack with classes.
Free Parent Evening - Indigenous Richness in Schools
Dear Parents:
Do you have questions about why treaty is being acknowledged more and more frequently in Elk Island Catholic Schools and all educational jurisdictions around Alberta? Are you unsure why there is a growing active focus on Indigenous learners ? Are you wanting to know more about guiding directives for our work with students?
Join educational leaders for a safe, supportive conversation where we begin by examining the historical and contemporary context for this focus. Presenters at this session will describe what this shift might look like in schools as we seek to develop increased foundational knowledge of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people in support of reconciliation and create caring learning environments. Develop your understanding and ask those burning questions you might be scared to ask.
Participants will explore our roles in this work and discuss how we are all important models for our children as we seek to develop an authentic and respectful relationship to this land, to its first peoples, and to each other.
Please consider attending this free, informative, and supportive discussion session on Tuesday, February 6 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm. The meeting will be in Room 17/18 at Elmwood School, 16325-83 Avenue, Edmonton.
Registration closes February 2. For full details and to register, go to: Foundation for What? First Nations, Métis and Inuit Foundation Knowledge - A Conversation about this New Richness in Schools.
