Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
October 25, 2019
End of Quarter 1
Report Cards are available today! Here are my thoughts about report cards...
First of all, I take them very seriously and put a lot of time and thought into them. Unfortunately, the comments are limited to 150 characters. I have so much more to say, but I tried to get the message across the best I could. As far as scores on each standard, most students at this point in the year are a 3. If your child received 4s, they are working slightly above a typical 3rd grade student. I gave some 5s, mainly in math. The scores in math are based upon many assessment, both formative and summative. Please don't equate a 5 with an A, 4 with a B, and so on... The scores aren't used as a grade, rather a present level, with 5 being the goal of mastery at the end of the year. I am happy to meet to discuss your child's progress to this point in the year. Reach out to me if you feel this would help you gain more of an understanding of your child's current progress.
Next week is Red Ribbon Week at SRE! Each day we will discuss a topic about saying no to drugs and bad choices. Be sure to check your child's notebook for spirit days associated with Red Ribbon Week!
That's all I have for now...
Enjoy your weekend! Go COLTS!!

Special Helper - Ady!
Room 9 Celebrations
A few student highlights from our week:
- We got a new student... Her name is Sheza. She moved to Carmel from Iowa. I was proud of all of my students for welcoming her and making her feel special on her first day!
- We were discussing the word "dozen" in math one day. Someone asked how many are in a dozen. Ady politely responds, "How can you not know what a dozen DONUTS are?" I couldn't agree more, Ady!
- As Brock was looking over his writing prompt that I handed back earlier in the week, after reading my comments he quietly exclamined, "Yessssss, I grew!"
- We are still working on learning The 50 States Song. I asked the class if anyone would like to volunteer to stand and sing the song in front of the class. Taylor and Max both volunteered and did an amazing job! We've been practicing being RISK TAKERS in Room 9, and boy did they practice that skill today!
- Maren has been working VERY hard on her Personal Narrative. I met with her and asked to to change a few things (the things I asked her to change were hard and I could tell she was not happy with me). The next day when she showed me her changes, I was amazed at the hard work she put into her writing!
- Ady, Ethan, Melina, and Sophie put Post-It Notes on Rio's desk...he's been gone the entire month of October, and they wanted to write notes for when he returns next Friday letting him know they missed him! Isn't that sweet?

Next Week...
Reading: Nonfiction
- Main Idea and Supporting Details
- Writing a Summary using the Main Idea and Supporting Details
THESE SKILLS ARE VERY DIFFICULT FOR 3rd GRADERS! We will take several days for learning and practicing!
Math: Unit 2 - Number Stories and Arrays - Test Next Week!
The following students have passed Addition in EXTRAMATH:
- Ginga
- Ben
- Lucy
- Collin
- Rayan
We will review for the Unit 2 Test on Monday, October 28 and will test on Tuesday, October 29. The test is a two-day test, so it will probably take the weekend for me to finish 26 tests because I look at each and make comments on the cover. I always send a Study Guide home for students to use as extra practice. You decide if your child needs to complete it or not.
Writing: Personal Narratives
We are winding down our personal narrative stories. I will be grading them over the next few weeks. Once they are all graded, we will compare our current story with the personal narrative we wrote in August. We will write a paragraph describing how we have grown our writing skills and use evidence from both stories as to prove our thinking.
Social Studies: Unit 8 Economy
- Costs vs Benefits
- Free Market Economy
- Supply - Demand
Be sure to ask your child what SKETCH NOTING is. We are using this method to record our learning about the concepts in chapter 9.
