Friday Launch

Happy Friday La Mesa Staff,
Thank you to EVERYONE for the love and support you have given our students. I know teachers are concerned with getting through content. I can't stress enough that it is ok that we are behind. It is so much better that our students get content deeply and retain and understand it, then we rush through to an arbitrary finish line and they remember or understand little of it. Take a deep breath everyone, we are almost there.
And a big thank you for all of the wonderful birthday wishes!
Thank you for all you do!

Lunch Connection Event
Teachers, please choose a student with whom you do not have a connection. It can even be a student who displays negative behaviors in class. This is not a reward lunch. You will not be talking about the student. Rather, this is an opportunity to connect and get to know the student and for them to get to know you. It could be a game-changer. We encourage teams to sit together to maximize the connections with students chosen by other teachers.
We hope you will all participate. Please Kevin Cooper with questions.
Capturing Kids' Hearts Spotlight
Using Your Social Contract
Building it is sometimes the easy part; but keeping it alive can be the hardest part if we aren't intentional.
Reflective Question:
Are you and your students self-managing and using the non-verbal signs?
Tips:
- Assign Social Contract raters
- Tie rewards to your contract.
- Focus on the word of the day:
- “As a class, what is one thing we are doing well on and what is one thing we need to improve upon?”
- “Hey class, no fouls were called today or even all week; let’s celebrate with a fun team building activity at the end of class.”
- Affirm students when they model the non-verbal signals correctly:
- “Thank you, John, for helping your friend stay on task. You’re a good friend!
- "Follow Through" really matters.
- Remember to hold the class accountable first. Commit the questions on page 35 of your CKH 1 Manual to memory! They will serve you well.
Students will rise to the level of expectation we have for them; keep modeling!

Staff Member Highlight:
Brit Beard uses her tickets to "pay" students for their commitment to their jobs. This fits under 100% effort (Working Hard) and leadership in the classroom. Way to go Brit!
Laura Frank recognizes students that help others who are struggling (Leadership).

A great example of an affirmation for a student from a teacher:
