Standards Based Assessment at the Elementary Level
As a foundation to our school system, it is our sincere purpose to help students, parents and guardians understand how curriculum, instruction and assessment is culminated and used at the elementary level.
Through research, collaboration and much hard work, the staff has developed the following in order to help students learn best:
1. Essential Standards
These are teaching standards that have been adopted from the State of Wisconsin. We teach all of the standards for each grade level. However, through a very long process we have determined certain standards that deem essential for all students to know prior to moving to the next grade level or skill level. We have shared these with you at conference time but will be sure to link them on our website as soon as possible.
2. Rubrics
For each one of the essential standards a rubric has been developed to clearly identify what distinguishes a 1- Below Basic, 2- Basic, 3- Proficient, 4- Advanced. We will link these on our website as soon as possible, also. You may or may not see these come home with your child each time they complete an assessment. Often, teachers will keep them to review with the child and provide them feedback.
In the past there has been a belief and understanding that children cannot receive a 4 unless they are showing mastery at above grade level work. This WAS true before this year. One thing we have learned though is that children often show advanced work within grade level curriculum and deserve earning a 4 for it. So, the staff is very well aware that a 4 is attainable this year. No matter a 1,2,3 or 4 there will always be evidence to prove as such.
3. Common Assessments
For each essential standard, the teachers have developed assessments that they will give to each child, no matter the teacher. Therefore, we will be able to truly examine understanding of each essential standard for each child.
4. WIN Time"What I Need"
Our goal is to help each and every child grow to show proficiency (3) in each of the essential standards by the end of the year. Therefore, if a child does not show proficiency on a common assessment they are being retaught until they understand the standard. During this time period each day we also use this time to continue extending those children who already have reached proficiency.
Please understand and trust that we want what is best for every child, every day, in every classroom. We continue to grow and learn in education each and every day, week and year. Therefore, we are continuously changing to better things, just as every profession does. If you ever have any questions please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher or myself. We are always happy to help!

CARES Ticket Winners!
Students earn what we call "CARES Tickets" whenever a staff member sees them following their CARES (Cooperation, Acceptance, Responsibility, Empathy & Self-Control) at school. When a student receives one of these they put their name on the back of it and they get to put it into their CARES bucket in their classroom. Each Thursday the class pulls out one lucky winner for a Lego necklace. Our theme this year is "Building a Better World", so Legos seem to fit perfect. Then, they dump ALL of their classroom CARES tickets into our BIG LEGO bin in the office. When this is full then they our school, as a whole, will celebrate our positive character at SCC Elementary!
