Update For Intermediate Families From Principal Gene Hoskins
Important Information For Participation In Recess, NYS Math Assessment, The 2021 Talent Show, and a Supply Pick-up For Virtual Students
I hope that all of out Intermediate School families had a fun, relaxing weekend! In this newsletter there is some important information regarding participation in recess and reminders regarding the NYS Math Assessment and Virtual Student Supply Pick-up on Tuesday.
Recess Participation:
We are allowing students to go outside on the playground for recess at lunch time, but we are limiting the number of students on the playground at any one time. We have developed the schedule below for homeroom teachers. It is important to note that students should wear appropriate clothing for going outside on the day that their homeroom has recess on the playground. Having a sweatshirt or hoodie for brisk days is very helpful. Students cannot run on the playground in flip flops - they should have sneakers on for safety reasons- it is too easy to turn an ankle with flip-flops on. Students will not go outside if the weather is very cold, raining, or if the ground is very wet from a recent shower. The students will be going out to the playground on the following schedule:
4th Grade:
- Mr. Abplanalp's & Mr. Komczyk's Homerooms: Mondays, Wednesdays, and odd Fridays
- Ms. Arnold's, Mrs. Bearce's, and Mrs. Bellone's Homerooms: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and even Fridays
5th Grade:
- Mr. Bastian"s and Mrs. Cookinham's Homerooms: Mondays, Wednesdays, and odd Fridays
- Mr. Cauwels, Mrs. Sergents, and Mrs. Sweeney's Homerooms: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and even Fridays
6th Grade:
- Mrs. Molnar and Mrs. Ludden's Homerooms: Mondays, Wednesdays, and odd Fridays
- Mrs. Reiber's and Mr. Wendel's Homerooms: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and even Fridays
Multigrade:
- Mrs. Heisler-Jarvis's Homeroom: Mondays, Wednesdays, and odd Fridays
NYS Math Assessment on Tuesday, May 4:
Similar to the NYS ELA Assessment, NYS has also made significant changes to the NYS Math Assessments. New York State has reduced the length of the test significantly, using only a one-day multiple choice format for state accountability measures. The number of multiple choice questions is also being reduced as they remove the field test questions normally included. The extended response portion of the math assessment where they show their work (normally on Day 2) will be provided to school districts to be used at their discretion and only for internal review.
Two Reminders For Parents of Virtual Students:
- Please Contact Us Regarding Your Child's Participation on the NYS Math Assessment: This Tuesday, May 4, we will be giving the NYS Math Assessment in the Intermediate School at 8:00 AM. Just like last week with the ELA Assessment, virtual students will have to take the test in school on Tuesday, or some other time within the next two weeks. I have to say how WONDERFUL it was to get to see so many of our virtual students in person during the ELA Assessment last Tuesday! It was great to see so many familiar faces of our virtual students, and get to meet some of our new Intermediate students in person for the first time. If you have not already done so, please call our Intermediate School Main Office at (315) 483-5242 and let us know whether or not you would like your child to take the shortened Math Assessment on Tuesday, May 4. Our goal is to know what the decision is for each virtual student before the end of the day on Monday, so we will be calling parents if we have not heard before then.
- Supply Pick-up for Virtual Students on Tuesday, May 4: There will be a supply pick-up for virtual students on Tuesday, May 4 from 9:00 AM - 6:00 PM in the Intermediate School Main Office. PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGE IN LOCATION. In the past you have picked-up supplies using the back cafeteria entrance, but on Tuesday you will need to come to the main entrance in front of the Intermediate School for the supplies. Virtual students who come into school to take the NYS Math Assessment Tuesday will be given their supplies before leaving school.
As always, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Bucenec or me if you have questions or concerns for your child. You can contact Mrs. Bucenec, Intermediate School Counselor, through email at mbucenec@soduscsd.org, me through email at ehoskins@soduscsd.org. You can also reach me by phone at school at (315) 483-5206, or on my cell phone in the evening or weekend at (315) 576-7090.
Sincerely,
Gene Hoskins

This Week (May 3- May 7) is Staff Appreciation Week
This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week. At Sodus we recognize the importance that all staff members on our team play in supporting our students, so we have always celebrated this week as "Staff Appreciation Week". As parents know, this past year has been challenging for all, but it has been particularly challenging for educators. Teachers, TA's, and all staff members have had to learn to do their jobs very differently, learning to teach virtually and use technology in the classrooms in ways we would have never imagined before last spring.
I am incredibly proud of the work done by our Intermediate School Team this school year- we have managed to stay open as a school throughout the year at a time when many schools were forced to close at times. We have been able to offer everyday in-person learning to those families who opted for that option, and a 100% virtual option for families who preferred that format. Most importantly, our staff members have been able to provide an environment in classes that have kept students growing and learning.
I want to extend an invitation for you to join us in Staff Appreciation Week by emailing me any thank-yous or shout-outs that you want to share regarding a member of our Intermediate School Team, regardless of the role they play on our team.
Please email me at ehoskins@soduscsd.org with any recognition you want to share for Staff Appreciation Week.
Thanks you!

RELATIONSHIP SKILLS (*continued - a reminder )- “The abilities to establish and maintain healthy and supportive relationships and to effectively navigate settings with diverse individuals and groups. This includes the capacities to communicate clearly, listen actively, cooperate, work collaboratively to problem solve and negotiate conflict constructively, navigate settings with differing social and cultural demands and opportunities, provide leadership, and seek or offer help when needed.” Here is another great quote from Brene Brown. Something to think about - we are all leaders - how does this apply to you? How are you evolving? And how are you helping others to evolve?
