Kindergarten News
Learning is Fun
Reading:
Kindergarten students continue to build their reading skills by exploring different types of texts and authors. This past week, Kindergarten celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday by doing an author study and reading several of his wonderful books. We compared stories and characters while also identifying other story elements such as: setting, problem, and solution. Some books we read were:
Hop on Pop, Fox in Socks, The Cat in the Hat, Oh The Places You’ll Go, Wacky Wednesday, The Lorax, Green Eggs and Ham, There’s a Wocket in My Pocket, and Hooray For Diffendoofer Day.
Phonics:
-identifying word families
-blending sounds together to make words
-magic “e” (long vowels)
Writing:
We just finished Procedural Writings (“How to” writings) and will soon begin sequence writing. We continue to focus on “becoming authors” and are learning to add more detail in our writings
Math:
-adding and subtracting numbers 1-10 using a variety of strategies
-Compose and decompose numbers using number bonds (adding to 10 in different ways)
-identifying the ones and tens place in a given number
Science/Social Studies
-seasons, weather, holidays
-famous people in history (Dr. Seuss)
-community

On Friday, March 10th, students can participate in Hat Day by making a $1 donation that will go directly to Special Olympics and honor our ZCS student athletes and partners who participate in Unified Champions. Please be on the lookout for information in your child’s folder.

Miss Wetzel's Counselor Corner
2nd Step-Emotion Management
So far, our students have learned about skills for learning and empathy. Skills for learning help students gain skills to help themselves learn, including how to focus their attention, listen carefully, use self-talk to stay on task and be assertive when asking for help. When discussing empathy, students learned to identify and understand their own and others’ feelings, how to take another’s perspective and how to show compassion. Students will now begin to discuss emotion management during their Steps to Strong in Every Way time. Students will learn specific skills for calming down when experiencing strong feelings, such as worry or anger. When we are able to recognize and label feelings in oneself and others, we can facilitate problem solving, self-management and social competence much better! Below are the Emotion Management unit home links for each grade level so you can learn more about what your child is learning, why it is important, and activities you can do at home with your child!
Family Assistance Form
When basic needs are met, students are better able to focus on education and learning. Therefore, there is assistance available for our students and their families to help with various needs that may arise throughout the school year. If you are currently in need of assistance, please fill out this Family Assistance form. This information will be kept in strictest confidence.
Warmly,
Jessica Wetzel

Elementary Science Materials Adoption
Elementary Science Materials Adoption: All elementary schools are in their last year of our science materials from Purdue University (they will not be supporting these in future years) and are reviewing new materials. At the same time, the Indiana Department of Education is revising standards over the coming months. During the month of March, we will have materials for parents to review at the Educational Services Center located at 900 Mulberry Street from 8:00 am-3:30 pm each day by appointment or online using the links below. We ask that parents provide us with feedback by the end of March so that when the standards are finalized, we can decide about materials and order in time for the start of school.
To set up a time to review materials, please contact Kelsey Thompson, Administrative Assistant, at kthompson@zcs.k12.in.us. For any questions about elementary science or the standards, please contact Christine Squier, Director of Academic Services, at csquier@zcs.k12.in.us.
