Upcoming Mercury Mission!
Using the Mercury Planetary Orbiter (MPO) and the Mercury Magnetospheric Orbiter (MMO), this mission is still in planning stages, and is going to be ready to go to Mercury in 2017! It will be using solar-electric propulsion and eight gravity assists, flying past the Earth and Moon in July, 2018, Venus in 2019 and 2020, and five Mercury flybys between 2020 and 2023.
What about this mission?
The scientist with the ESA want to explore the interior structure, geology, composition, and the magnetic field of Mercury. Plus some asteroids sunward towards Earth. There is also collaboration with the Japanese Space Agency to help with the Mercury mission.
This is not a one time thing. This mission will inspire other scientist to keep this going and continue to learn more about our planets, plus we will already know more about Mercury, thus letting us to discover more about our solar system.
