Friday Launch
August 24, 2018
We had our first two Positive Behavior Referrals and the first student was so excited he shared it with his classes for Good Things for several periods.
It is so fun to be walking around between periods seeing so many of you at your door greeting and connecting with kids. The smiles on their faces are priceless. The smiles on YOUR faces are pure gold.
Our Affirmation email chain is going strong. The beautiful thing about affirmations is what they do not only for the giver and the receiver, but for all of us that get to witness it. Let’s not break that chain. As of today we are 16 people deep with a great mix of both classified and certificated.
Feel free to stop by my office and initial our social contract. If I am in there it’s a nice opportunity for me to say hello to you.
Have a great weekend! Thank you for making the start of the year so incredible!

Once your Social Contract is up and signed, the challenge is to keep it alive! Here are some best practices from our Process Champions:
"Make the Social Contract a game/competition between periods. Create a scoreboard with each period's class on it, then record the contract raters score every single day on the scoreboard. The period with the highest rating total at the end of the quarter gets a party. This highly incentivizes the students to follow the Social Contract. It makes the contract raters feel like their ratings matter. It also keeps the SC relevant the entire school year." -Jess Guidroz
"Include your social contact as part of your objective and activity expectations. Also as you give positive feedback to a student or class refer to the social contact and the specific word that was exhibited. My favorite thing to do with the social contact is to have a student greeter who explains to classroom guests what our contract means to our class!" -Gwen Delgado
“Don’t forget to have a student write the contract. That way it shows student ownership rather than just teacher.” -Robin DesChamps
"Remember to use the contract to positively reinforce behaviors that you see being exhibited in your classes. For example, if 'helpful' is on your contract, acknowledge when you notice your students being particularly helpful towards one another and point out how that behavior is working to make the entire class more safe and successful." - Lauren Behar Prince
“Periodically review as a class what actions the different words on the Social Contract include. For example: ‘We put RESPECT on our Social Contract. What did we say RESPECT means? What does RESPECT look like in our classroom?'. This is helpful because it cuts down on students telling you a certain behavior is not on the list or students ‘forgetting’ what a word meant.”- Nicole Arteaga
“Have launches picked out and ready to go that focus on individual words. For example, a launch that is about putting in 100% effort. If you have a student pick a focus word at the beginning of the period, use the launch that applies at the end of the period.” - Shawny Good
"As a the teacher, I pick a word that I am going to focus on for the lesson. For example, if I am in the lab I might say I am really going to focus on being an active listener so that I make sure that I hear and answer all students' questions. This way students remember that we all are responsible to following the social contract." - Kezban McGeever
"I assign a rater for the week. Since this is student led, it is up to the rater to rate the class each day (rating from 1-10). The rater should select words from the social contract. I have a scoreboard visible to the class where the rater inputs the rating. At the end of the week I add up the points. The class with the most points at the end of the quarter gets a pizza party." - Maira Romero
