We had a wonderful time celebrating our fifth graders on Friday morning! Thank you to our fifth grade team, Dr. Arencibia, and Stephanie Shankle for making the ceremony extra special for our Texans. We wish our fifth graders the best of luck as they prepare for middle school!
This week is full of fun and celebrations! See below for the schedule for each grade-level's celebration times. Looking forward to seeing many of you on Wednesday at our end of year picnic. Remember that Thursday our Texans are released at 11:45 a.m. for the last day of the 2016-2017 school yea.

Picnic Wednesday
- Guests' pre-ordered meal tickets will be in the front office. Please pick-up as you sign in for the picnic.
- Student who did not per-order lunch, can get a sack lunch from the cafeteria or bring a lunch from home.
- The lunch schedule will be slightly altered for the In-N-Out Burger truck. Please note the adjusted lunch schedule.

STAAR/STAAR EOC Results Update
All STAAR results from the spring 2017 administration will be released throughout the summer. The Texas Education Agency Student Data Online Portal will open on June 2 for STAAR End of Course Exams (EOCs) and then June 14 for all remaining exams. STAAR 5th/8th Grade (Math and Reading) exams have already been released and are available in the online portal.
To review the results through the online portal, parents can log into Skyward Family Access to find their Unique Access Code. For instructions on retrieving the Unique Access Code, visit our information page.
Starting with this Spring’s results, TEA has redesigned the confidential student report. To learn more about the update, please visit TEA’s New STAAR Report Card website. The confidential student reports will be mailed to parents after the following dates:
STAAR EOCs - June 22
All other exams (Grades 3 - 8) - August 8
Challenge Coin Contest 4th & 5th
- What does commitment look like?
- What does citizenship look like?
- How can you illustrate these two very important traits?
Contest Objective: Create a design that illustrates either commitment or citizenship with veterans and/or military service members in mind.
Submitted designs will be judged. If your design wins, it will be made into a real challenge coin that will be displayed at the 15th annual Skyball Fundraiser Event honoring active duty and military support organizations. Skyball is a premier fundraiser for the Air Power Foundation sponsored by American Airlines.
Who: 4th and 5th grade GCISD students
What: Design that illustrates what commitment or citizenship means to the artist. Use pencil and/or colored pencil and/or marker.
When: The contest entry is due May 30th, 2017 Turn into Mr. Hughes Winners will be announced August 2017 when school starts in the Fall.
Where: Contest can be done mostly at home. Students will also be allowed to work on contest in Art class the week of May 22nd.
The use of symbols will be important in the design. Students should assess what symbols to use based on what they feel best communicates the meaning of the value traits; commitment or citizenship.
Here’s what you do:
1. Search for examples of challenge coins - research
2. Write down ideas and draw some rough sketches - brainstorm
3. Sketch your final idea lightly in template provided - design
4. Finalize your sketch in the template provided
5. Add color if desired
- Colored pencil
- Marker
- Use one color and create different values of that one color
- Light to dark (value)
6. Write about your design in the provided section of handout
7. Have parents fill out release form
8. Turn into Mr. Hughes on or before May 30th, 2017

Details
- One-week sessions from June 12 – July 21
- 8:30 – 11:30 and/or 12:30 – 3:30
- Fee: $100-$110/course with a one-time $25 registration fee
- Early Bird discount of $10/course if registered and paid before 5/14/16
- Location: Cross Timbers Middle School
- Part-Time KidzU Care is available for students enrolled in Summer Enrichment before and after classes.
