MJH Alumni Update: Angelica Villanueva
What years did you attend MJH?
I attended MJH from 1997-1999 for 7th and 8th grade. This was before it became a middle school, to include 6th grade.
Did you have a favorite class, subject, or teacher at MJH?
My favorite class was Band. I enjoyed learning how to play an instrument and spend time with my friends. My second favorite was keyboarding since we learned how to type on the keyboard since the internet was fairly new. I also enjoyed my core classes since we were part of a team: the Teens in Black. The movie Men in Black had just come out (July 1997) and we even had team shirts made. My dad helped me create the logo for it that was used. It was black with an eagle wearing sunglasses. My favorite teacher was Mr. Berger. How could anyone forget that last name? He taught Social Studies and was in charge of raising funds, so we could go to Washington, D.C. It was such a memorable adventure! (I can't believe my parents let me go!)
What degrees or certifications did you go on to obtain?
I graduated from Mission High School in May 2003. Go Eagles! In May 2007, I graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from UTRGV, formally known as The University of Texas- Pan American (UPTA). Go Broncs! In 2015, I received my certification in Early Childhood-6th grade (EC-6) and Special Education (SPED).
What career did you end up pursuing and why?
I became a teacher because I wanted to share my love of learning with others, especially children. I first taught English Language Arts and Reading (ELAR) for 3rd-5th, then all subjects for 5th grade at two Catholic private schools. I later became a Special Education Resource and Inclusion teacher with Mission CISD, at Cantu Elementary. In March 2022, I became a Dyslexia teacher and have been able to work at Alton Memorial Junior High, Bryan Elementary, and now Mission Junior High. I love teaching children how to read, write and spell. I also teach them to care for others, as I show them how I care for them. My parents both worked for Mission CISD for forty years! My sister and brother are also educators. I always knew I would become a teacher. I still incorporate my degree of caring for others in the community each day when I teach my students in the classroom.
I always wanted to work in the school district I grew up in. I am a product of Mission CISD from Kinder-12th grade. I enjoyed my public schooling and hope that each student in our district feels the same way. I have much more to share to enrich this community I love dearly!
