Similes
Definition - A simile is a way of language where you compare something using the word "like" or "as".
Example - My pillow is smooth as silk.
The "as" that I highlighted is the simile there.
Idioms
Definition - An idiom is a word or phrase that is not taken literally.
Example - It is raining cats and dogs.
Actual meaning - It is raining a large amount
Alliteration
Definition - A alliteration is a phrase that uses one letter as much times in one sentence.
Example - Alice's aunt ate apples and acorns around August
Metaphors
Definition- A metaphor is when the writer says it literally without using like or as.
Example - Stars are fire.
Onomatopoeia
Definition - An Onomatopoeia is like sound effects.
Example - When I spilt water it made the sound splash!
The splash that I highlighted is the Onomatopoeia.
Hyperbole
Definition - A Hyperbole is a sentence that is highly exaggerated or nearly impossible.
Example - He was so tired that the sweat he had made a pool of sweat.
Personification
Definition - A Personification is when you give a human quality to something that is not a human.
Example - When I was trying to get the cupcake it said "Don't eat me!".
Cupcakes can't talk so if it says don't eat me that is a Personification.
