In Reading we have been working on making inferences while reading. The students loved sharing their inference bags with the class! We have really been working hard ending the year with independent reading time. It is so very important that you keep your son/daughter reading over the summer! Remember that your child can still access iReady over the summer for literacy practice.
In Writing we finished our Writing for Many Purposes Unit. We worked on persuasive writing, a friendly letter, a thank you letter, a list, my favorite things, an all about book, a how to book, and an acrostic poem. WOW! We are so proud of our WRITERS!!!
In Math we have been working on addition and subtraction word problems. We are also working on addition and subtraction fluency. Remember to work with numbers over the summer and also log on to Dreambox! Go to the Patriots home page, click on the icons, it’s that easy!!!
In Science we have started our Properties Unit. We have explored how to classify and categorize objects based on their properties: color, shape, size, texture, and weight. We are also starting our wood and and paper unit this month. First grade friends came down to kindergarten to teach us about plants as well! They did a great job!!! We are working on The Sheep in the Jeep PBL, working with force in motion.
Thank you so much for all of your support this school year!!! We couldn’t have done it with you! Have a wonderful summer and make lots of memories!!
First Grade News
In reading this month we will be focusing on our written comprehension skills as we approach the end of the year testing window. We will also begin a fun and exciting unit on Reader's Theater. During this unit students will work to build their fluency and then collaborate with their group to put on a Reader's Theater performance. All parents and family are welcome to attend our Reader's Theater performance on June 8 from 10:00-11:15!
In writing this month students are developing and writing their own fictional chapter book stories which will include story elements and characters.
In math this month we will be working in our unit on balancing equations through the use of the equal sign. Students will be using addition and subtraction problems to balance the equations. We will be using terms like equal, not equal (unequal), and true and false. Students will also be working to find missing numbers in subtraction equations. We will wrap up the month by reviewing all of the skills and strategies we have learned this school year.
In STEM we are finishing our unit on biomes and animal habitats around the world. We will also be diving into the three regions of North Carolina as well as the animals and habitats within each region. We will be finishing this unit with a project where students focus on one animal and its habitat. In social studies, we will look at human's effect on the environment and cardinal directions.
Second Grade News
Happy May from Second Grade! It came fast!
The last week of the month (the week of the 29th – no school that Monday) will be STEAM week. Each grade level is doing their own activities for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. Each day of that week from 9 – 11 we will switch classes (staying in the homeroom group) and have lots of fun with ideas surrounding the theme for the day. As time draws closer, watch for information to come home.
In reading, students will be working with Fairy Tales in many ways. They will be learning the importance of fairy tales, practicing written response questions, and making their own questions about the story. Later, they will be doing a reader’s theater.
In writing, students will be working with poems and learning from different poets all the ways poetry can be written. Later in the month they will do their own writing assessments including a reflection writing.
In math, students will be working with arrays to begin the multiplication unit. There will be a lot of practice and much discussion about how multiplication is just repeated addition. There will also be a time to work with the patterns of multiplication which helps to understand and remember the facts.
For science, students will be working with different species using fairy tales. They will also be building settings using recycled materials for the tales. Science will also be giving time for insect reports and for learning about having fun in the sun.
Have a great May!
Third Grade News
In math, we are reviewing for the EOG. The Reading EOG will be held on May 31, and the Math EOG will be on June 1. We have started to send EOG review packets for weekly homework. In addition, we are starting to review strategies for the EOG that will help students relax and take their time during the test. We are also still looking for EOG proctors. If you are willing to help, please fill out the following form:
In addition, to avoid the “summer slide”, any reading students can do over the summer will be greatly appreciated and advantageous. Thank you for all of your help and support!
Fourth Grade News
This month in ELA students are learning about Mythology and using figurative language. Students will apply skills regarding plot, comparing and contrasting, theme, and character traits using Mythology.
In math they are wrapping up the geometry and measurement units. They are learning to identify angles and triangles, measuring and calculating perimeter and area and all about symmetry of two dimensional shapes.
They will end the year in science learning about health and nutrition. They have learned how other living organisms get energy by looking at food chains and food webs and now they will look more specifically how humans get their energy through food, and the best food and healthy habits.
Some other things 4th graders are particularly looking forward to are learning about pirates in the state of North Carolina and then celebrating the end of the year with the 4th grade pirate themed party. Please be on the lookout for donation requests from your child's homeroom teacher very soon.
The 4th grade team would like to thank all of the parents for your support this year and we wish for all of you to have a fun and safe summer!
5th Grade News
We are right in the middle of our weather unit and we are looking forward to our Anemometer PBL with second grade! We are also excited about our new kite PBL which will tie together math and science as we look at air currents and the shape and design of kites. Our "macdaddy" science review sheets will start coming home the week of May15th. These "macdaddy" sheets are all the crucial and important information your child needs to know for the science EOG. There will be one sheet a week focused on a different standard. Our Science Cram Jam is Friday, June 2nd. We will spend the day reviewing our whole year of science in a fun way! If you are interested or willing to lend a hand to one of the teachers/staff members, we could use some help!
Students will identify and explore the battle that began the Civil War, served as the turning point, and ended the war. We will also explain the significance of the Civil War on the social, political, and economic development of the US.
In reading, we are wrapping up our learning and are ready to review. Please have your child review his/her reader's workshop journal for a short time each night. It has been a really long time since we put those notes at the beginning of these journals and that information definitely needs to be refreshed. We will be taking weekly tests to review information and to build test taking stamina as well as integrating some non-traditional strategies using technology, partner, group, and individual assignments to help us show what we know.
In math we are continuing to polish our skills on fractions. We are looking at strategies to break down word problems. In connection with our PBL on kite building we are using our measurement, skills and our knowledge of perimeter and area to create scale models of our originals. We are hoping for a windy day to be able to fly our creations.
Promotion Ceremony-
Please make sure you have June 8th at 6:15 pm on your calendar for our promotion ceremony. REMINDER...this will be at C.C. Griffin, not at Patriots. We are requesting that the students wear dress pants (khakis), but no jeans or shorts and a collared shirt (no t-shirts). Girls can wear dresses, but no spaghetti straps (unless covered with a sweater/wrap). We strongly encourage shoes they are comfortable in (low/no heel) since they will be walking in front of a large crowd. Please email your child's teacher with any questions. We hope to see you there.
