Elkhorn High School
From The Principal
Elkhorn High School Community,
As we approach the Thanksgiving season I am appreciative to have the opportunity to reflect on the year we have had thus far. From the uncertainty of March 12th, to distance learning, to concerns of an outbreak upon school opening - this community has been able to keep our school open and our students learning in full this fall - which should absolutely be celebrated. Students have had to forego some cherished traditions, which is tough for both families and educators alike to see. Just the same, when I see students learning, studying, competing, and socializing this fall it is hard not to be taken back by the efforts and grit which have been shown over these last eight months.
If we chose to look for roadblocks this year, we can find them. However, in the face of increasing COVID cases throughout the metro and nationally, we have been able to stay open 100% of the time and our students have increasingly been able to compete in extracurricular activities - for that I am extremely grateful. These successes did not happen by accident. We achieved this success through collective effort from students, staff, family, and administration. With COVID cases spiking in the metro, and social distancing fatigue setting in - I again ask of you to remain vigilant and help us to reduce the spread in our community so we can continue to provide the opportunities which in-person schooling brings. We will make it through this fall uptick together with a unified effort!
Last friday we were able to celebrate 462 honor roll students as well as 117 Elkhorn Excellence Award winners, who were nominated by staff. This crew deserves more than just a t-shirt and some ice cream for their efforts in an unprecedented quarter, but this was a start! As this year continues, I wanted to take some time to discuss college preparedness, always a topic this time of year. Without a doubt, what separates EHS and Elkhorn Public Schools as a whole from its peers is a focus on being prepared for college, not just eligible. I am an adamant believer a student should be pushed academically to struggle before they leave the highly structured support system of teachers, counselors, parents, and admin which high school can provide. If we were to focus solely on credit completion, we would lose sight of how many students are driven out of college by rigor they did not have to face previously. This is why our team will continue to push students into four years of challenging coursework which will equip them with the tools to be successful when they leave the nest in the coming years. This task has always been made more possible with parents/guardians at home who have helped us to continue pushing rigor at EHS. Thank you and Go Antlers!
I appreciate all of your efforts supporting your students and our school this fall, and I look forward to conversations moving forward this year at Elkhorn High School.
Have a great week and a Great Thanksgiving. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
