Know Thyself!
"Ms. Oglesby, How do I prepare for the college application?"
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, I want to start working on my application now. Where should I start?"
"How well do you know yourself?"
"Huhn?!"
"Start by learning more about who you are, so when people ask you about yourself you will be able to say more than 'HUHN?'."
I am not attempting to be philosophical. After reviewing transcripts last week and discussing courses to select for the Spring term, the 11th graders and I briefly outlined a timeline. The general timeline/checklist is linked below and includes features of the college application that we will learn more about in the months to come.
IN THE MEANTIME... The process is so much more smooth when student's know who they are. By that, I mean answering some of the following questions:
In what environment can you effectively study/read/take notes?
How many very close friends do you have? Do they all share the same interests as you?
How well do you get along with your family? Is your little sister annoying or the apple of your eye?
Do you like the smell of cows?
Do you get car sick?
Have you ever been away from your family for longer than a month?
What makes you laugh?
What makes you angry?
Do you love football?
Do you love screaming? Cheering?
What are you hobbies? Skiing? Pie-eating contests? Quoting Socrates?
What kind of student are you? Focused? Driven? Unmotivated?
Are you conservative? Liberal? Do you want to stay that way?
How many children should a family have and why?
What do you think of colonialism? Globalization?
Should children believe in Santa?
Is mass incarceration problematic? Why or why not?
Do you like animals?
Are you passionate about anything? If not, would you like to be? If yes, what?
The better you know yourself, the easier it will be to match you with colleges and universities throughout the world. I will teach you how to do all the rest. There will be plenty of time to rush during the Fall of 2016. Enjoy the holidays!
