Delran High School Broadcast
October 3, 2019
DELRAN HIGH SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT
Delran High School, an inclusive learning community, provides educational opportunities for intellectual development while valuing the importance of cultural diversity and tradition.
A Message from Mr. Finkle!
Happy Autumn! October is here and it is going to be a very busy month at DHS. Interim grades will be posted on the Parent Portal on Thursday, October 10th. Our College Planning Part 1 and SAT/ACT Information Night is scheduled for Tuesday, October 22nd. All are invited to attend this very important evening. The PSATs will be given to Sophomores, Juniors, and select Seniors on Wednesday, October 30th. Freshmen and non-testing Seniors will have a two-hour delay.
Construction Update
The entrance should be open by the end of the month. We are just waiting for some cosmetic work as well as the finishing touches. Please remember that the side of the building which faces Hartford Road will NO LONGER be used as an entrance. Please also be sure to use the visitor's parking spaces in front of the new entrance if you are picking up a child.
Math Center
I would like to bring to your attention a support system that we have in place here at DHS to assist students who are having trouble in mathematics. This center is manned by a certified math teacher and is available during all four lunch periods. Teachers will be in the Math Center location for the entire period regardless of the frequency or number of students attending. Please encourage your child to take advantage of the free help that is offered by the Math Center.
Homecoming
I will be sending out a special Homecoming Broadcast on Wednesday, October 9th with all the necessary information and guidelines. The theme this year is......
Come on, I'll let you know on Wednesday!
If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact me at dfinkle@delranschools.org or (856) 461-6100 x3005.

KING COURT: Jack Benson, Dustin Desher, Ronald Moten, Christopher Pappas and Ryan Wachter
Congrats Delran's Got Talent Winners
On Wednesday, October 2nd, Delran's Thespian Society sponsored the 9th Annual Delran's Got Talent competition, and, boy, does Delran have some great talent! Out of the ten high school and middle school acts, four of them featured the students presenting their own original compositions. In fact, there was so much talent, the judges were compelled to award two acts a tie for third place. Winning first place was Katelyn Swander, second place was the duo of Olivia Jones and Grace Cascio, and tied-for-third place were Tim Zukovsky and Sam Gonzaga. Congratulations to all the performers, and special thanks go to our fabulous celebrity judges Mrs. Jue Mattle, Ms. Simon, and Mr. Finkle.
AP Exam(s) Registration and Payment Deadline
Delran High School will be administering AP Exams in May 2020. One of the major changes to the AP Exam this school year is the requirement of fall registration. Your child has to be decisive about what AP exam(s) he/she will take this Spring. He/she must retrieve and complete the “AP Test Registration Form” from an AP teacher. On this form, your child will list the desired AP exam(s) he/she wants to take. Please give your child a single check for the correct amount for the desired AP exam(s) payable to “DHS Special Funds.” Please have your child deliver the “AP Test Registration Form” and check to Mrs. Kitty Newman in the Guidance Office by November 1, 2019.
If you have any questions regarding AP exam registration or payment, please contact Mrs. Kitty Newman in Guidance or Dr. Danielle Jones as soon as possible.
Here are the following AP exam fees to consider:
Standard exam fee: $94 per exam
Reduced exam fee for eligible students: $53 per exam
Unused/canceled exam fee: $40 per exam
Late order fee btw. Nov. 16, 2019 and Mar. 13, 2020: $40 per exam (in addition to the base exam fee)
Late-testing fee: $40 per exam (in addition to the base exam fee) (Note: Contact Dr. Jones for excusable reasons when a late fee isn’t incurred for late-testing)
Week of Respect
The Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights Act (P.L.2010, c.122) requires that the week beginning with the first Monday in October of each year be designated as the Week of Respect in New Jersey. To recognize the importance of character education, school districts, charter schools and Renaissance school projects are required to observe the week by providing age-appropriate instruction focusing on preventing HIB. Our School Safety Team has coordinated the following activities for lunch periods:
- DHS will participate in “Joining the Revolution” when students and staff sign an online petition for inclusion and ending discrimination. Additionally, the students will construct an inclusion banner in their lunch periods, participate in “Mix It Up” lunch as well as a trivia contest whereupon winners will be served lunch by the Administration.

STOPit - Online Reporting Tool
STOPit is an online reporting tool designed to deter and mitigate bullying, cyber abuse, and other inappropriate behaviors, consisting of an app and a back-end incident management system for school administrators.
Our students will have access to the STOPit mobile app, which has two simple but powerful features.
Report can be used by students to report incidents to school contacts anonymously.
Messenger can be used to engage in anonymous two-way communication with school contacts.
Both Report and Messenger empower students to stand up for themselves and for one another. Students have the power to help put an end to harmful and inappropriate behavior they see online through social media and other means. They can use STOPit to reach out for help if they or a peer are facing a personal crisis or experiencing bullying, abuse, or are otherwise in need of assistance. Our goal with STOPit is to create safer, kinder, school communities both online and off.
No student information is needed to use STOPit. The only way personally identifiable information will be accessible through STOPit is if a student voluntarily includes it within the content of a report or message.
Both our school and STOPit are committed to protecting the privacy of student data. STOPit is a signatory to the Student Privacy Pledge, spearheaded by the Future of Privacy Forum and the Software & Information Industry Association. You may review STOPit’s Privacy Policy for details, including more information on how anonymous reporting works.
Please note that we will be launching STOPit with a School Assembly tomorrow for Juniors and Seniors and on Monday for Freshmen and Sophomores. At that time, your child will be invited to download the STOPit app from the app store on his or her smartphone at no charge.
More information and resources can be found online at stopitsolutions.com.
CURRICULUM REPORT
World Language Department
We have a new French teacher! Aleksandra Mijic Kukavica is from Bosnia and speaks five languages. She has taught previously in Europe and is a welcome addition to our Delran Family.
The Spanish teachers received school supplies for their class this year through a grant from Donors Choose. Donors Choose is a wonderful organization that supports educators! They fund simple things from pencils and trimmers to whiteboard sets. If you’re an educator, check it out! For Spanish heritage month, students will be learning about Spanish products, practices, and perceptions.
The German students will be learning about Oktoberfest this month, which is in full swing in Munich. They will also be celebrating National Teach German Week in early October. October 3rd is German-American Day, and students will be celebrating by learning about famous German Americans like Levi Strauss and Albert Einstein. They will also be creating commercials for German products that many Americans use every day.
The World Languages Department is in the process of creating an International Club for students who want to celebrate and learn about other cultures, languages, and traditions. The club will be run by students from Brazil, Turkey, Bosnia, and other countries. Everyone is welcome! Let’s get together and learn about our neighbors.

Fab Lab News
Now that we’ve hosted our first community engagement event in the Delran Innovation & Fabrication Lab, the buzz about digital fabrication and the Delran STEM Ecosystem Alliance work is catching on. Paul Reynolds, children’s author and CEO of Fable Vision, was the keynote speaker to the entire Delran Staff at in-service day on Friday, September 27th. Following the kickoff, three sessions of Fab@School design software and die cut machine training occurred for staff and 15 of STEM Ambassadors. This was followed by an open house, community engagement event for pre-registered families, called Fab@School: Create Bravely.
Check out the following online articles about the work happening in the lab, including Friday’s event:
