Mokena Meteor Music

October 26 - November 1, 2018

What is happening in the music department?

I will be sending a Newsletter similar to this every week (usually on Fridays).

Please be sure to read it in its entirety as I often update sections each week.

We have a parade coming up in a few weeks. This is MANDATORY for all 6th, 7th and 8th grade band students. Please see below for more information.

Important Information

Junior High Band Rehearsal Changes for Next Week

Next week, we will be having a percussion clinician come in to work with our 6th, 7th and 8th grade percussionists. Mr. Jonathon Kurecki is a graduate of Utah State University in percussion performance. As a student there, he taught privately to local students and was a leader amongst the ensembles. Currently, Mr. Kurecki is a Senior Sales Associate at Music and Arts specializing in percussion. As a local teacher, Mr. Kurecki is currently a freelance percussionist, performer and educator, and is a staff member with the Lincoln-Way Marching Band.

Because Mr. Kurecki will be working with the percussionists in the band room, we will be having an alternate rehearsal schedule for all wind players (woodwind and brass) next week. The schedule will be as follows:

6th, 7th and 8th Grade Percussionists should attend morning band rehearsals ALL WEEK.

Monday: NO WIND PLAYERS

Tuesday: Brass Only - NO Woodwinds

Wednesday: Woodwinds Only - NO Brass

Thursday: Brass Only - NO Woodwinds

Friday: Woodwinds Only - NO Brass

We would like to thank the Mokena Music Boosters for this amazing opportunity!

THIS ONLY APPLIES TO THE JUNIOR HIGH BANDS. Beginning and Cadet Band Students will rehearse as usual.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Cheney on the birth of their son, Martin Vincent. Martin was born on Friday, October 19 at 8:28 pm. He weighted 8 lbs, 6 oz and measured 20.5 inches.

Welcome to the Mokena Meteor Music Family!!!

Pep Band and Jazz Band Interest

As of right now, Pep Band will NOT go forward unless two - three more trumpets sign up and we get at least one more low brass player.

Jazz Band will most likely proceed.

There are sign up sheets in the band hallway for students who are interested in joining Pep Band and Jazz Band. If your child is interested in either or these groups, please encourage them to sign up on the lists posted outside the band room. If we have enough interest, these ensembles will go forward.

The Deadline is MONDAY...

Annual Pie Sale Fundraiser!!!

October 23 marks the start of our Annual Pie Sale! As always, 100% of the profits from the sale will go directly to the Mokena Bands and Choir. You are needed to make this fundraiser a success! Throughout the years, Mokena Music Boosters purchases have included music stands, choir shells, instruments and Marching Meteor program trailer. Ongoing the boosters also purchase sheet music and fund the repair and maintenance of instruments. All the money raised helps our children have one of the highest quality music programs in the area!

Private Music Lessons

It is not required that Mokena music students take private lessons. It is true, however, that the vast majority of students who do not take private lessons tend to have improper playing habits, and never reach their full potential as musicians. SECTIONALS ARE NOT A REPLACEMENT FOR PRIVATE LESSONS. There are still many benefits of private instruction over full band rehearsal and small group sectionals. If you are interested in getting your child private lessons on their instrument, please visit the following link: https://www.mokenameteormusic159.org/uploads/2/3/4/4/23449316/private_lessons.pdf

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Bussean or Ms. Beekman

Mokena Parade of Lights

Tonal Energy App - Highly Recommended

TonalEnergy Tuner is an all-inclusive, easy to use application designed for individual practice and/or large ensemble rehearsals that aides musicians to improve sound quality and intonation.

Tuning, volume, articulation, release, duration, and steadiness are the key elements of developing a beautiful tone quality. TonalEnergy Tuner is the first multi-purpose application that allows users of all ages to understand and improve every aspect of their sound.

This app is especially useful to young brass players who struggle to find the correct partial. Oftentimes they think they are playing the correct pitch, when in fact, they are not. This can be very frustrating. This app can help students learn where the correct partial is and to hear when they are not matching the correct pitch.

In addition to its tuner capabilities, it has a built in metronome to keep students rehearsing with a steady beat!

We highly recommend that all students in our band program invest in this application if they have access to a device. It is well worth the $3.99 it costs. This is much more inexpensive than a separate metronome and tuner device.

Check Your Charms Account Balances

You will be receiving monthly Charms statements on or about the first of every month. Please check your balances in Charms at any time by logging into your child's account. If money is due, please pay one of four ways:

  1. Cash (in an envelope clearly marked)
  2. Check made payable to the Mokena Music Boosters - write who and what it is for in the memo line
  3. Paypal via the Paypal button on your Charms account
  4. IBA Transfer - please complete the online transfer form: https://goo.gl/forms/MOZFB8jurkbF7ByR2
