Educator and First Responder Breakfast
On Thursday, April 6, 2017, local law enforcement and administrators from the Beaverton School District gathered at Beaverton Foursquare Church for the quarterly Educator and First Responder Breakfast.
Participants heard from Sheriff Craig Roberts from the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office regarding their response to the active-shooter incident at Clackamas Town Center as well as their assistance during the 2014 Reynolds High School shooting and the 2015 Umpqua Community College mass shooting.
The keynote speaker was Frank DeAngelis, retired Principal of Columbine High School. DeAngelis spoke about the April 1999 tragedy, aftermath and recovery.
Take the Annual Parent Survey - Your Opinion Matters!
Please take a few moments to complete the BSD Annual Parent Survey during the month of April! The survey helps us to evaluate our progress in educating your child and planning for the future. Our goal is to ensure that every member of our school community feels welcomed, valued, and informed, so it is important for all parents/guardians to complete the survey. The survey data will be summarized so that each person who answers will remain anonymous.
A link to the 2017 Annual Parent Survey was sent to all valid parent email addresses via SchoolMessenger on Monday, April 3, 2017. The deadline to participate is Friday, April 28, 2017. You can view a copy of the survey in both English and Spanish on the Research & Reports webpage.
District Goal: WE empower all students to achieve post-high school success.

WE Innovate: Jacob Wismer ES Translator Tree
At Jacob Wismer Elementary School, everyone is one big family. But this wasn't always the case.
"Jacob Wismer chose "unity" as its school-wide theme this school year. Our school song is "We're All a Family, Under One Sky," yet we knew that we were not effectively communicating with all of our families when we have 31 different languages spoken and our newsletters and school communications go out only in English," says Joan McFadden, Principal. Beaverton City Library Hosts Reception Celebrating Children's Reading & World Languages
On Friday, April 14, at 9:30 a.m., join Beaverton City Library at 12375 SW Fifth St. for a reception celebrating children's reading and world languages.
Beaverton City Library is a partner in a Library Services and Technology Act grant won by Early Learning Washington County. This grant provided $40,000 to purchase materials for children ages 0-6 in Arabic, Chinese, Somali, Spanish and Vietnamese. With these funds, the library also purchased a small collection of parenting books in Arabic, Chinese, Spanish and Vietnamese. All of these titles can be found in the World Languages collection in the Children’s area on the first floor of the main library.
Beaverton City Library offers books for children in 21 languages: Amharic, Arabic, Bengali, Braille, Chinese, English, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Nepali, Persian, Polish, Russian, Somali, Spanish and Vietnamese, and for adults in 13 languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Russian, Somali, Spanish and Vietnamese.
The library also offers weekly Spanish story time on Saturdays at 3 p.m., resuming April 8. Japanese story times are hosted monthly on the first Saturday at 9:30 a.m. World Language Storytime Week will be held May 30-June 3. Storytime languages, dates and times will be available in early April.
This event is free and open to the public; no registration is required. For more information, visit www.BeavertonLibrary.org or call 503-526-2599.

THPRD Summer Registration Begins April 22
The official start of summer may still be a couple months away, but if you’re within the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District, planning for it begins now.
Online and phone registration for THPRD summer classes, camps and activities will be open to in-district residents starting Saturday, April 22, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Class descriptions and schedules, along with registration instructions and forms, are in THPRD’s 2017 summer activities guide. The book was mailed in late March to each household within park district boundaries and is available online at www.thprd.org. Extra printed copies are at THPRD centers, the Administration Office, and certain community sites, including Beaverton-area libraries.
Patrons registering by computer for the first time must establish an online account in advance at http://www.thprd.org/activities. Those registering by phone should call 503-439-9400 April 22-25 (after April 25, call any park district center or the Administration Office at 503-645-6433). THPRD will again offer, on a limited basis, Spanish language assistance during phone-in registration for classes and programs.
For residents living outside the Tualatin Hills district, online and phone registration will begin April 24, 2017 at 8:30 a.m.; registration in person or by mail begins the following day.
