Fall is in the air! It is hard to believe that it is already October. We have a lot of exciting things happening this month.
Now that we have received all the beginning of the year assessments, teachers are in full swing with working with your students in meeting their needs of where they are at. Students are doing a great job learning all the procedures for the day and showing great growth in their academic progress.
We have a small break during this month and hope that families enjoy that time with their families. During this time off, please remind students to read daily and practice math facts with you.

Counselor's Corner
Happy October! Fall is coming!
Handle With Care
If your family is experiencing difficulty at home, we would like to provide additional supports at school. We understand that you are not always able to share details and that’s okay. If your child is coming to school after a difficult night, morning, or weekend, please email your counselor this message, “Handle With Care” to mwitham@willisisd.org or enter you and your child(rens) names. Nothing else will be said or asked. This will let me know that your child may need extra time, patience, or help during the day.
During September students are learning about the character trait HONESTY. Students will be learning about the importance of being truthful in what you say and do.
TIPS TO BUILD EMOTIONAL RESILIENCE IN KIDS
- Spend quality time with kids. When they feel loved and supported, children develop emotional strength.
- Talk about feelings so your child learns to share their worries and fears with people they trust.
- Instead of rushing to solve problems, give kids time to work things out themselves.
- When children experience failure or disappointment, it's important to praise their effort and encourage them to try again.
- Acknowledge your own mistakes to teach kids that mistakes are essential for learning and growth.
- If your child can't find a solution to a problem, use gentle questioning to guide them towards it.
- Ensure kids are eating well and getting sleep and exercise.

¡Feliz octubre! ¡El otoño está próximo!
Tratar Con Cuidado

Instructional Coaches News
Reading: Readers across campus have been learning all about the things that make up a fiction text. They've been enjoying books that include exciting characters and interesting plots and breaking apart the important events in stories. Teachers have been helping students find text evidence that supports thinking and students have been completing written and drawing responses to things that they have read. We've been enjoying the wonderful world of fiction!
Writing: Our students have been doing quite a bit of writing in response to things they have read both as a whole group and in small group settings. Our writers have also been learning about the key pieces of writing a personal narrative and practicing the early skills of the writing process through brainstorming and organizing their thinking.
Sincerely,
Courtney Simard

Science has been booming across the building. I have enjoyed seeing so many classrooms doing science hands-on activities during class and our TREA time. Students have been looking at types of energy, magnets, types of motion, and physical properties. Coming up in October, our Kinder through 3rd-grade students will be finishing up types of motion and coming into Earth Materials. They will observe and describe rocks, soil, and water. They will also need to understand how these 3 things are useful in their world. This would be a great conversation at home too. One idea would be to think about a garden-talk about how rocks, soil, and water are vital for a plant to grow. In our 4-5 grade classrooms, students are learning about types of energy, light with refraction/reflection, and circuits. Ask your student why the light comes on and if it is a closed or open circuit. If the light is on then it is a closed circuit, if it is off then it is an open circuit!
closed or open circuit. If the light is on then it is a closed circuit, if it is off then it is an open circuit!
Math across the building has been great as well! Kinder will be finishing up their graphing unit and moving into reading, writing, and representing numbers to 20. 1st will be moving into place value which is HUGE! 2nd will be working on coins-have your kids count coins at home!! 3rd will be building their foundational understanding of the multiplication-major concepts for sure! 4th will be building on their concept of multiplication and division, and 5th will be working through multiplication and division with decimals. These are some major topics that build on each other. Practice with students at home if you are able to so their fluency will increase.
Take care,
Beth Puckett
"Math is the language of the universe. So the more equations you know, the more you can converse with the cosmos."

Car Rider
Car riders will be given a car rider sign for parents to display on their dashboard during pick-up. The signs are different each year, so please be sure to get the sign for the current school year. If a person comes through the car rider line without a sign, they will be instructed to park and go to the receptionist window to show identification to obtain a child.
If you are sending someone different to pick up your child, please alert the front office and be sure that person brings their driver's license for proper identification. We will not release students to any person not on the emergency list unless authorization is given by the primary custodial parent.
All car riders will be picked up in the front parking lot. It is important that you follow all C.C. Hardy employee instructions for efficiency and safety purposes. See below for more Car Rider Rules and Policies!
