Qualifications Needed for House of Representatives

  • At least 25 years of age
  • Be a citizen of the United States for at least seven years
  • Live in the state that they want to be chosen in

Qualifications Needed For Senate

  • Members have to be a least 30 years old
  • Have to be a citizen of the United States for a least 9 years
  • Have to live in the state that they want to be chosen in

Meeting Times

The Congress has to meet at least once a year on the first Monday in December unless the law states differently.

RULES OF CONGRESS

Each House is allowed to choose their own rules and punishments.

POWERS OF CONGRESS

  • collect taxes
  • pay debts
  • provide for the common defense
  • to define and punish piracies and felonies
  • to declare war
  • to raise and support armies
  • to establish post offices

HOW A BILL BECOMES A LAW

  • Congress has to vote on it
  • Goes to the President
  • The president has the power to make it a law or to veto it
  • If it is vetoed, it can go back through congress to become a law if at least 3/5 vote for it to become a law.
