Week of 4/16/18 - 4/20/18
Letter from Principal Nelson
We want to thank all of you for helping your student get ready for this past week of STAAR testing and altered schedules. We don’t preach the STAAR, nor teach to it per se, but when it comes time to take these tests, it’s all systems go and we take every effort to make sure our kids have every opportunity to be successful. We owe it to our students to provide a safe, quiet, somewhat familiar location where they can focus intensely and succeed. Kudos to our 6th grade teachers and students for planning off-campus experiences and various academic rotations which kept them off testing floors! There’s a flaw in the system when one day two-thirds of our kids are testing and then only one-third the next day, yet our amazing staff and eager students made it through better than could be expected. We’ve got another round of testing in May which has the entire campus testing, but we’ve no worries at all as we were able to safely navigate through this altered week with aplomb.
Speaking of STAAR testing, if and whenever your student feels nervous or anxious about the upcoming test, have them come see me or a counselor. We want to make sure they know that the test is merely one source of data we use when looking at the picture of the whole child. We want them to know we base their success on the 178 days during the school year when they are not testing rather than the 2 days in which they are. We’ve said it time and time again, and hope they believe us; until the time we see 21st Century job openings in “multiple choice test taking,” the STAAR test is not our number one priority.
Lots of good things going on here in Smallville and in and around the school district. To get a sneak peek as to what your kids are doing in our neck of the woods, be sure to follow me on Twitter at @smallprincipal. For an even more in depth look at the goings on, swing by and have lunch with your student one day or see if any extra help is needed in the office or copy room. We love having as many guardians and parents as possible on campus because it helps showcase the home and school connection for our kids and allows them to see how we are all on the same page.
Have a great weekend. Monday it’s back to the drawing board in regards to a regular class schedule. If you have an 8th grader in your brood, do impress upon h/her that yes indeed they still do have to attend school even though they’ve taken STAAR and that they owe it to themselves and us to finish their campaign here as strongly as when they started three years ago.

Quick Sponsorship Need
Do you know of a company, or organization that might help us purchase Waterproof lanyards for our upcoming SplastFest. The minimum we can buy is 500 and the total cost is about $1000.
If you know of a company out there that might want to purchase them for us, or help us out with some of the cost, maybe we can work something out. The kids will be able to use them all summer long and it would be a great way for someone to advertise and partner with our school.
If you are interested, or know someone we might ask, contact Jennifer.email@example.com
