Never leave them hanging!
My favorite research topics at the moment are the cognitive science and retrieval practice. I'm fascinated with learning how to help students (and adults coming to professional learning) to retain and use the experiences and information we share. Here's a great blog by Mark Chubb about closing a lesson. I am totally guilty of teaching kids till the very last moment and then wondering why they didn't retain the concept. (This is true for adults, too.) People of all ages need time to organize and solidify their new ideas or they're too messy to remember. If you're like me, take some inspiration from this post and set yourself a timer so you seize the moment and plan for a strong closing every time.
Here's the KEY!!
Many of you already know about Fawn Nguyen's fabulous visualpatterns.org website. Students can be invited to simply extend the pattern by drawing or building the next step, or encouraged to figure out how many circles would be in step 43 or even challenged to write the algebraic rule for the pattern. In the past, teachers would need to work the pattern out for themselves but now there is a KEY so that you can easily choose a linear, quadratic, or other solution quite easily. Elementary students love figuring out the next step without worrying about the algebra, so this is not just for the big kids. Enjoy this free resource with over 360 patterns to choose from!
