Selkirk Middle School - February 28, 2020
Welcome to Selkirk!
Through a grant awarded from WEA – Eastern Council, 7th graders had an opportunity on Wednesday to learn about Salish history and language. Middle school students and teachers from the Spokane Salish School traveled to Selkirk for a learning exchange. The Salish 6th, 7th and 8th graders performed traditional songs with drum accompaniment and helped teach small-group break out lessons throughout the day. Selkirk students played UNO in Salish, learned some basic greetings in Salish and played a traditional game: Bear, Salmon, Mosquito. In return the Salish students experienced a day in a traditional middle school, enjoying lunch in the cafeteria and navigating the halls during passing periods. It was a fantastic way to add depth to our WA State History curriculum while creating academic and cultural connections! (Huge thank you to Mrs. Pecha for planning and organizing this awesome event!)
