Origami and Picture Book Fun!
Our JISD students learned the art of Origami while making connections with fiction and non-fiction books! After listening to a read-aloud of the story, Not Norman! written by Kelly Bennett, the students created origami goldfish using procedural text from the book, Origami for Children by Mari and Roshin Ono. The students had a swimmingly good time with their goldfish!
It's a Plane! It's a B52! It's a Cockroach?!
The students traveled to Hawai’i and listened as Mrs. Schweizerhof read the story, How the B52 Cockroach Learned How to Fly, written by Lisa Matsumoto. After enjoying the Pourquoi tale, the students made science connections as they reviewed the parts of an insect body while learning how to use pipe cleaners to create their cockroach models! The students had fun creating their crawling critters!
Virtual Events @ Your JISD Libraries
KHMS Student Wins @ Virtual Book Festival!
7th grader, Warren, from Kitty Hawk Middle School attended the Y'All Stay Home Virtual Book Festival in April and won a book! He can't wait to read The Unstoppable Wasp by Sam Maggs. How exciting!!
Students Share their reading @ KHMS
What have students been doing during this pandemic? Reading, of course!! Check out this Padlet to see a snapshot of what students have been reading.
Principal Meets with BOB Group @ Paschall
Paschall principal, Ms. Davila, isn't going to let something like a quarantine or the school building being closed stop her from preparing her fifth-grade students for the upcoming Reimagined Battle of the Books competition. She is meeting with her team on Zoom to discuss the 15 titles! We appreciate her dedication and support of the program!
Look for the details of the Reimagined Battle in August. Keep reading y'all!
Activities by your JHS Librarians
Your Judson High School librarians are hard at work providing lots of enriching opportunities for all JISD students, families, and community members. We offer weekly yoga classes with Mrs. Boyd and several storytime and STEM-centered activities with Mrs. Ortiz. Additionally, Mrs. Ortiz is leading three different book clubs: an adult thriller book club, an adult literary fiction/memoir book club, and a middle-grade book club. Check out the information on the Judson HS Library Facebook page for a list of the upcoming titles for each of the book clubs. All of the middle-grade selections are available on the Sora app from your MyJISDPortal. Book Clubs will run throughout the entire summer.
Activity Guide Fun!
Digital Scrapbook
We learned about the online FREE digital scrapbook maker, Blurb, and the importance of telling your story. The Blurb digital books can be used not only for digital scrapbooks, but you can self-publish your novel, graphic novel, or comic strips. It's also great to create a portfolio.
Reader's Theater
RME Librarian, Ms. Heine conducted a Reader's Theater activity. She taught students where to find scripts and how to create their own scripts. She and her family also acted out a few examples. It was super fun!
Hump-day Harmony
This beautiful picture book by Mihn Le and Dan Santat, Drawn Together, was the perfect selection for Asian American Heritage Month. It is beautifully illustrated, and it's an equally beautiful story of learning to communicate in ways other than language.
Hair Love
Hopkins & Candlewood Librarian, Claire St. Pierre, shared the award-winning Hair Love by Matthew Cherry. She read the book and we watched the Oscar-winning short film too!
Photography
VMHS Library Assistant, Mrs. Constantino, held 3 photography classes. She gave very informative tips for photography using both a traditional camera and a cell phone. We left excited to make our pictures better!
First Chapter
Woodlake Hills Librarian, Ms. Adame-Moylan, reads the first chapter of books to get middle school students interested. She reads them on Friday; First Chapter Friday.
Jellyfish
Students from Candlewood and Hopkins learned fascinating facts about these mysterious sea creatures through Follett Lightbox and then created their very own Jellyfish In a Bottle. To try this activity on your own, visit www.bit.ly/JISDjellyfish
New Crayons
