~FIELD NOTES FOR FAMILIES~
News from Jackson Intermediate School-10/12/20
Our mission: We are a community of learners inspiring each child to explore, grow, and achieve.
It's Parent-Teacher Conference time. You should have received a contact from your child's teacher(s) to schedule a virtual conference time. This fall, we'll meet via Zoom so you'll have a link from the teacher and a specific date/time to log into the ZOOM "waiting room." The teacher is alerted when each person logs in and s/he will "admit" you at your scheduled time.
If you haven't heard from your child's teacher about scheduling a conference, please feel free to email him/her (scroll to the bottom for email contacts) or call the school office and we'll make sure to connect you.
Conference dates are Tuesday (10/13) or Thursday (10/15) from 3:45-7:00pm, however, if neither of those works for you, our teachers will find another time that works better.
As required by the State of Ohio, all 3rd graders take the Ohio State Test in English Language Arts each fall and spring. This year, the test window opens the week of October 19, 2020. Students will take the ELA test on Monday (10/19) for hybrid group A and Thursday (10/22) for hybrid group B. LVA students will take the test in person at Lakewood High School. Parents of LVA students will be contacted separately to schedule testing times.
Thank you, as always, for your partnership this year. Let's continue to support one another and stay positive~the Lancer Way!
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Working Together!

Physical Education~Mr. Jackson
JIS PE Unit 1: For the first PE unit of the year we're focusing on communication in a problem-solving setting. Students will be working together to complete a series of challenges during each class. At the end of each challenge the class will come together and talk about how communication played a role in their success.
At home challenge – Group object lift:
This is an activity for three to four people. The object is to work together to lift a light item to head height without anyone losing touch of the item.
Each team member uses just their two index fingers under the item to lift the item. If the item loses contact with any team member's fingers the item must be returned to the ground before trying again. It is important for the item to be light–hula hoops work well–but anything that is rigid and has enough room for multiple people to surround will work (ie long twig or broom).
*No gripping with or wrapping fingers around the item*

WEDNESDAY HOMEROOM ZOOMS
Our in person homeroom teachers host Zooms on Wednesdays to bring our A and B learners together as one group for an hour. Class meetings for 15-20 minutes are followed by open remote learning assistance afterward. Please remind your child to log on and participate as this is part of remote learning attendance tracking.
5th Grade Zooms - 9:00am
4th Grade Zooms - 12:00pm
3rd Grade Zooms - 2:00pm
Attendance Expectations
Student attendance in remote learning will be tracked by evidence of participation and completion of assignments provided on remote days. This will include, but is not limited to:
· daily logins to online learning platforms (examples: Edgenuity, Edmentum, ST Math, Reflex Math, Reading Eggs)
· daily interactions with teachers, such as emails, telephone calls, Zoom meetings or other live chats
· assignment completion (examples: Google classroom assignment, lab report, quiz)
ADDITIONAL DETAILS:
IN PERSON ATTENDANCE
Teachers will take attendance as usual on days when children are in person.
ABSENT FROM SCHOOL
On days when your child is absent, please call (740) 928-1915 to leave a message stating the child's name, teacher, grade, and reason for absence before 8:00 a.m. If you can't call and leave a message you need to send a note with this information when your child returns to school.
Without either a call or a note, the absence will be recorded as unexcused.
If you child has a dental or medical appointment, please request a "seen by the doctor/return to school" excuse provided by most medical offices. Students and teachers will work together to make up missed assignments.
REMOTE LEARNING ATTENDANCE DAYS~Tracking began the week of 9/14/20
Hybrid learners are expected to engage in the school work each day they are not in person. Parents/guardians should establish a structure, space and routine for daily learning. Attendance will be tracked using student participation and completion of remote assignments including hard copies of materials provided, attendance in class zooms and/or office hours, and reports from student online work.
Incomplete or missing assignments result in an absence of minutes/hours for student attendance, however, students may be assigned to working lunchtime to complete the work since the practice and learning is key. Completed work will not recover absences but will be evaluated and applied to subject grades.
If your child is sick or otherwise unable to complete assignments on remote learning days, parents/guardians should call the school office at (740) 928-1915 and report the absence in the same manner described above.
VISITORS TO JACKSON A & B
If you have to come to Jackson, please use the buzzers located outside the main entrances of each building, be sure to wear a face covering if you have to enter either building, and please follow the guidance of the office staff to ensure everyone's safety.
