Madison Memo
April 2022
A Message from the Principal
I hope you and your family had a relaxing spring break and are ready to finish the 4th quarter strong!
April is a month of unpredictability in terms of weather. Please send your child to school prepared for all types of weather - snow, rain, and warm weather. Dressing in layers is also helpful as we know the temperature can turn quickly. Finally, no matter the grade, recess in the month of April can be messy with wet ground, equipment, and mud. Having an extra change of clothes in your child's backpack is super helpful!
The month of April is also busy with lots of events. Make sure to check out the calendar below for all things Madison happening. We hope you are able to attend many of the great things planned!
Continue to think spring and warm weather. Keep reading and stay Madison Proud!

With the weather warming up, it’s the perfect time to bring out the bikes. But before kids start riding, here are some tips to stay safe on two wheels!
Why is bike safety so important?
Bike riding is a lot of fun, but accidents can happen. Bike safety should be reviewed with kids to prevent bike injuries.
Why should kids wear a bike helmet?
Wearing a well fit helmet on a bike helps protect the face, head, and brain if they fall down.
Wear a helmet for every ride, even if it is a short ride.
Don’t wear a hat under the helmet.
Take care of the helmet. If it’s damaged, it won’t protect as well.
Put reflective stickers on the helmet so drivers can see your child better.
What should kids wear when riding a bike?
Wearing bright colored clothes helps others see your child.
Putting reflectors on their bike can also help them stay safe.
Wear sneakers when riding a bike, not flip-flops, sandals, or riding barefoot.
Don’t allow wearing headphones, which can distract from noises around them.
Where is it safe to ride a bike?
Parents should review with their child where they’re allowed to ride, how far they can go, and if they can ride on the sidewalk or street.
Daytime riding is the safest.
Always keep an eye out for cars and trucks.
Madison Math - April is Financial Literacy Month
Who is teaching your kids or grandkids about money? In school students learn the names and values of coins and bills. They may think about money when skip counting, working with decimals, or even use it as a model for fractions. In many grade levels they also think about money in problem solving. There are so many great applications to the numbers aspect of money in the classroom, but concepts like how money works in our world and financial literacy topics are not always emphasized. Many parents avoid talking with their kids about money because of their own financial frustrations or regrets. If kids aren’t learning about money at home or school, then they are either left in the dark or will learn financial habits from their peers and the media.
Regardless of what is taught in schools, parents and guardians are still the primary educators when it comes to teaching children about earning, spending, and saving. April is Financial Literacy Month, making it a great time to teach your kids or grandkids about money. It’s never too late for these critical lessons to begin!
Tip 1: Be a role-model.
At its core, teaching kids about money means modeling good behavior. Know that you don’t have to be a finance expert in order to teach them important lessons that will benefit them in the future.
Tip 2: Play money games.
Some games teach kids about money, including old standards like Monopoly and many modern video or smart phone games. Playing these games as a family can reinforce the lessons you are already teaching your child.
Tip 3: Get your child involved in household finances.
Do not assume that your child is too young to learn about money; even the youngest children can grasp the basic concepts. If you want to teach kids about money, you need to give them hands-on experience. From trips to the grocery store or getting paid to complete chores, there are plenty of ways to get your children involved with day-to-day finances.
Tip 4: Encourage saving with a matching program.
A surprising number of adults do not take advantage of employer matched retirement plans. Why not give your kids a head start on this concept by setting up your own matching program? Lessons learned in childhood have a direct impact on their financial well-being as adults, so offer to kick in a little extra for every dollar your child saves.
Tip 5: Increase the complexity of the lessons over time.
For young children, lessons about money may be very simple, but older kids can handle additional complexity. Making your monetary lessons age-appropriate will enhance their effectiveness, so your kids can grow up to be financially savvy adults.
Teaching your kids about money may be one of the best investments you’ll make, and the principles you instill in them at a young age can last a lifetime. Check out the links below for a few more parent resources to support financial literacy with children.
