5th Grade Lock-in

Our 5th grade lock-in has been scheduled! This is a reward for those 5th graders that have shown good behavior throughout the year. To be able to attend, you child cannot have served a detention for behavior this year. Invitations will be given to those students that have earned this reward in the coming weeks. If you are unsure if your child can attend because of behavior, feel free to email me and I will let you know. The lock-in is scheduled for Friday May 19 from 7pm to Saturday May 20 at 7am. More information will be sent home in May.

We are still reading My Brother Sam is Dead. We finished up our Literature Circle books this past week. Students will then begin a final project for their book on Monday. This will be done in class with their Lit Circle group.

Language Arts

We will be finishing up our unit on Pronouns this week.

We will take a break from writing and spelling this week due to ISTEP testing.

We have begun unit 16 in Math. This unit revolves around "Advanced Computation". In this unit we will be covering order of operations and exponents.

Social Studies

This week in Social Studies, we will continue to delve into the causes of the American Revolution. We will be reading about and discussing the First Continental Congress, Paul Revere's Ride, and many more topics. We will also continue watching Liberty's Kids. This is an educational cartoon series that follows two kids through the American Revolution in the point-of-view of a journalist.

Science & Health

We have finished our Solar System unit. We will take a break from Science until after ISTEP, then we will pick back up with a STEM activity.

Student Council

Student Council has begun an online lost and found on our JES Facebook page to help parents find missing jackets and sweatshirts their kids have left at school. Check it out and see if any are your child's!

Parents, if you have not signed up for Pinwheel, I encourage you to do so. This website will help you keep informed of activities, tests, projects, etc... that your child is involved in or has coming up. You can create an account and sign up for the groups that your kids are in. If your child does not participate in any extracurricular activities, it can still be beneficial to you. The school calendar is attached to Pinwheel. I will also be adding tests, projects, and other 5th grade dates on Pinwheel. It's really simple to do!

"In an effort to improve communication between Johnson Elementary and our school community, we are now using Pinwheel. We are sure you will appreciate the convenience of a single source for all the information you want to know in a simple, intuitive system. You will be able to stay on top of everything that your kids are up to, and can receive homework and test reminders …as well as club meetings, practices, and game updates. Information came home with your students to help you to create a Pinwheel account." --Mr. Routt
