Mission
Student Spotlight - Giffin Gracey
Griffin Gracy is a 10th grader who has been homeschooling for almost 4 years. He began homeschooling his first year to allow for more time for direct reading intervention to address his dyslexia and the following year his other 2 brothers homeschooled full time. "Homeschooling allows us to choose the style of teaching that meets our children's learning style and allows for more freedom and choice about what and how they are learning." Griffin took advantage of Eagle River Homeschool classes to get a taste of theater last semester. Griffin loves Teaching Textbooks for math and IEW for English. His favorite class has been the Avalanche classes taken through the Alaska Avalanche School. Griffin participates in sports at Chugiak High School and loves skiing and baseball. He participates in Player's Edge Sports Academy. Griffin also loves serving and leading in his church Upward Basketball ministry. Griffin was recently honored with the Most Valuable Teammate award by the Chugiak High School cross country ski team and the Volunteer of the Year award from the Anchorage Parks Foundation through the Youth Employment in Parks Program last summer. He has earned a great reputation and paychecks with his exceptional refereeing skills.
Griffin is tenacious and hard working and has a way of finding the good in things. Struggling with dyslexia, Griffin loves how homeschooling allows him to spend more time to focus on his strengths instead of his weaknesses. He is able to work at his own pace, and learn about things he is interested in, in a style that keeps him engaged, and without the stress of the traditional classroom setting. Griffin enjoys learning much more more and has the desire to learn and teach himself new things. He is more independent in his learning and has developed planning skills and time management strategies in order to get his work done. He has also gained a lot of great job-related communication skills.
Staff Spotlight-Laurie Matthews
This week’s staff spotlight is Laurie Matthews, our Dean of Students. Laurie’s educational journey started as a second grade teacher. She then moved to a middle school language arts classroom and fell in love with working with tweens and teaching the writing process. Laurie decided to resign from the classroom and stay at home when Cole (now almost 17) was born. She intended to return to the middle school language arts classroom after he completed Kindergarten, but she was surprised to find herself a homeschooling parent at his request. She had been working as a vendor teaching writing and math to homeschooled families, so it felt right to transition into that world. She was able to homeschool Cole from first grade through eleventh grade. Laurie feels blessed to have been able to make the choice to remain home and focus on educating her son and other homeschooling children. During COVID, Laurie became a sponsor teacher for FPCS, and she was hired as the Dean of Students this year.
Laurie and her husband became grandparents to Parker four years ago, and their entire world changed. Their daughter and son-in-law moved their family to Japan two years ago with the military. She appreciates the technology of facetime, because her granddaughter is able to call her for stories and songs and to play games pretty much every day. Facetime is allowing the bond to remain strong. Now Laurie has a second granddaughter, Prim, who is six months old. Once the COVID restrictions were lifted, Laurie was able to travel to Japan to spend a few wonderful weeks with the babies. Laurie enjoys berry picking and spending time outdoors on sunny days. She loves to meet our FPCS families and talk about homeschooling, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to her.
